Archbishop Hoban boys basketball team tops Kenmore: High School Sports Roundup

The foul line proved Archbishop Hoban's best friend Friday night when it hosted Kenmore in a boys basketball season opener for both teams.

The Knights, thanks to a 23-of-32 effort in free throws, withstood Desean Ballinger's 24-point effort for a 64-60 victory.

Jaelen Hollinger's 16 points, 11 points by Deallen Jackson and 10 points each from Mike Londa and Anthony Christian paced Hoban's balanced offense.

No. 5 Garfield Heights 78, Horizon Science Academy 33 Freshman Willie Jackson, in his first varsity start, led the Bulldogs (1-0) with 20 points, while classmate Frankie Hughes added 13 points. Juniors Al Burge and David Bell followed with 11 points each.

No. 25 Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 57, Willoughby South 51 The Lions used a 23-9 fourth-quarter run to erase a 42-34 deficit. Dan Sapp's 23 points and nine rebounds, Chris Shkil's 12 points and 12 rebounds, and John Cirillo's 13 points, six rebounds and three assists paced NDCL.

No. 23 North Royalton 65, Berea 52 The Bears got 10 points from Nick Krempasky to muster the season-opening win on the road.

No. 24 Westlake 78, Revere 45 Gavin Skelly totaled 16 points, and Jamie Lackner and Bryan Mackenzie tallied 14 points each in the victory for the host Demons.

Padua 79, Valley Forge 48 Tyler Ptacek scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds and added two assists as he became only the second player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau, but Matt Milliken's 30 points and four assists paced the Bruins (1-0). Joe Leary was dominant inside, scoring 12 points while pulling down six rebounds and blocking two shots.

Martin Luther King 90, New Day Academy 62 The Crusaders took a 28-9 lead after the first quarter and then cruised behind Anthony Carmen's 27-point performance.

Lakewood 91, John Marshall 48 Rangers senior Peter Nelson connected on four 3-pointers en route to scoring 23 points in the win.

Lake Ridge Academy 47, Hearts for Jesus 33 The Royals kept Hearts for Jesus to single digits in each of the four quarters, and Devin Gabriel netted 28 points to lead Lake Ridge.

Kenston 58, Lakeside 45 Jack Quigley and David Fruchter made up for the absence of injured Darryl Richards and Peter Rozman with 14 and 12 points, respectively, as the Bombers won at home.

Twinsburg 57, Copley 53 The host Tigers overcame a 21-9 deficit early on to pull out the victory. AJ Edwards finished with 21 points and 19 rebounds for Twinsburg.

Girls basketball

No. 14 Gilmour Academy 53, Brush 46 The visiting Arcs gave Gilmour Academy (3-0) all it could handle. The Lancers, who were outscored, 13-5, in the third quarter, got 20 points from Jess Janota.

Chagrin Falls 59, Perry 31 Hallie Thome tallied 24 points while twin sister Hannah Thome dished five assists in the Tigers' (3-0) Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division rout. Shannon Clegg added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Hawken 45, Independence 37 The Hawks (1-0) won the CVC Metro Division by outscoring host Independence, 14-6, in the fourth quarter. Meredith Cohen led Hawken with 10 points.

Newbury 49, Cardinal 33 Thirteen points by Nicole Iden lifted the Knights (1-1) to the CVC County Division win.

Berkshire 48, Harvey 27 Kayla Byler outscored Harvey by herself, collecting 32 points as the host Badgers (1-1) prevailed in the CVC County Division game.

Green 2,590, Norton 1,717 Justin Bridgeman's high game of 223 along his 434 series led the Bulldogs past the Panthers.
