This is kind of their year to start putting it all together. They have a great young core and two draft picks. Do you guys think they will definitely let Mo Williams, Foye, Bell, Millsap, and Jefferson all walk? I really want to see Favors and Kanter starting at the 4 & 5. Haywood is a no brainer. And it looks like they’re going hard for Schroeder or Larkin as their PG of the future.

But who’s going to fill that last spot in the starting five? I think Burks is a good player but I personally don’t see him starting on a playoff team. With their second pick this year they could go after another wing like Snell, Crabbe, or Bullock but they may want to add depth to the front court with everyone leaving. Its very likely that Marvin Williams will pick up his player option and be the interim starter this year. And a young team like this could tank this year and get a high draft pick next year. Too early to speculate but if they are in the lottery at all they could get anyone at SG or SF from Wiggins to Parker (they’d love Parker in UT) to Seldon to Henoza etc.

But I wanna know what you guys think about the Jazz’s fifth spot for the future.

    A. Burks
    B. 21th pick in 2013
    C. 2014 pick
    D. Other

    Who WILL it be?
What do YOU think they should do?

I think they should hand over the reigns to the young players play next season. I would love to have Parker in a Jazz uniform next season, but I doubt they will tank. As for the last starting spot I was wondering if Shabazz is still on the board, whether at 14 or 21, should we take him. I would personally take Shabazz cause the Jazz need a personality and with Big Al, Milsap and Mo Williams potentially leaving we need someone to score the ball.

Jefferson or Millsap will be back, Foye probably will be back. Grab a point guard and a small forward, they can make the playoffs.

If they bring them back (milsap, Jefferson, Williams), then the jazz will be stuck in mediocrity. Always a 7-8th seed who gets bumped in the first round. If they allow their young guns to get experience they may be able to be something special. You say the owner won’t let them tank, but I’m pretty sure Jabari Parker will convince him other wise. He shouldn’t care about sales for his team as much as the teams success only because success brings profit. So I really would like to see all of them gone next year. They are all at point in there career that they need to become either ring chasers or money chasers, and those are two things Utah doesn’t need.

I hope they get rid of Burks, they’ve misused him his whole career and given him inconsistent minutes. He’s far from a point guard and averaged 20 PPG as a Soph. in college. I still think he has a chance to be a good starter for someone who knows how to utilise a player like him. Tons of untapped potential. They should try to trade up with him.

Im pretty sure, considering theyll have about $35 million in cap room this summer, that they could extend Hayward and Favors AND go for a good free agent PG(ie; Jennings, Teague, Calderon, etc) with what theyll have leftover. Just a thought.

That’s not how it works. Hayward and Favors’ extensions will kick in when their rookie contracts are over, which would be the 14-15 season.
If they want to compete next yr they’d use that money on some key vets.
They could sign someone like Calderon to a 2 yr, 3rd option deal Draft a PG. Use Calderon as a stopgap until the rookie is ready to take over the reins to lead a playoff ready team.
Also, a guy like Iguodala will be available as he’s expected to turn down his option. Imagine if they got him.
          Calderon/ Iguodala/ Hayward/Favors/Kanter
That’s a pretty balanced starting lineup. Say they draft Larkin and Olynyk with their picks. Their bench would be Larkin, Olynyk, Marv.Williams, A.Burks.

If they go with all youth next yr they will suck, but maybe that’s what they want to do. They’ll have that flexibility if they strike out on the “bigger” names in FA.

Any shot they try to trade their two picks up to snag Trey Burke?

First, the Jazz should NOT re-sign Sap or Jefferson. Sap apparently put his house on the market right when the season ended, so he’s probably out. (http://www.slcdunk.com/2013/6/13/4425326/the-youve-got-a-friend-edition-the-downbeat-1065.) Al Jefferson absolutely does not fit with the young core, so he also must go.

Second, the Jazz need to start Kanter, Favors and Hayward.

Third, stop underrating Burks. Burks has an elite handle, high athleticism, a decent deep ball (.369 from deep last year) and mediocre passing skills. However, he’s good in the P&R and, if finally given time on the court, could develop into a high level combo guard and possibly a solid starter at either the 1 or 2. He simply has not received enough time on the court for anyone to know for sure. He has been horribly mishandled his entire career.

Finally, the Jazz need to embrace the youth they have on their team. Play 2013-14 in a way that maximizes the development of their young players and don’t waste any more seasons in desperation to get the 8th slot in the playoffs. If they take this approach for 1-2 years they could develop into an NBA powerhouse again. If they bring back Al, Mo, Foye, etc. at the detriment of the youth movement, they will remain in mediocrity indefinitely.

One out of Jefferson and Millsap will surely move on. I personally think they may try to keep Millsap as he’s been there a long time and is popular with the fans plus will cost less to renew than Jefferson. There are 96 frontcourt minutes each game so running a 3 man big rotation could work well.

The Jazz don’t appear to have obvious trade up options as teams ahead of them with multiple picks like Oklahoma and Minnesota are perhaps likely to look to trade up themselves. I wonder if Philly may consider a deal but would two first rounders be worth giving up to move up 3 places.

All this Jabari Parker to the Jazz needs to slow down. I don’t think the Jazz will make the playoffs next season but that is more about the other teams in the west than it is about Utah. All the teams that made it this year will be in contention again I am sure and Portland, Minnesota and Dallas (pending free agency) should all be better than they were last year. I don’t think the jazz will be bad enough to be in contention for a top 5 pick. Even if they go with all the young guys I doubt they will drop more than 10 games in the win column this upcoming season. That would still only put them near the end of the lottery (without moving up in the lotto of course).

Another factor to consider is that if there is any player with one and done talent that has the makeup to stay a couple years in college it is Jabari Parker. I could see him staying at least 2 years because he is genuinely focused on academics and it never hurts to get another year with Coach K.

As to answer your initial question I would go with Burks. The kid is only 21 and has never started a game in the NBA. He gets you 15 points per 36 minutes and even though he isn’t a great shooter he would fit well next to Hayward and Larkin (assuming they pick him 14th). He can get to the basket and the foul line which is something both of those guys lack and they can make up for his poor outside shooting as well.

If you are going to go with the young guys up front might as well go with one of your young guys at SG as well. The only way the younger players will get better is to get some playing time so I would go that route for sure in Utah.

I hope both Big Al and Paul end up somewhere else next yr, they have given it their best but the future is Kanter and Favors and they need to be given the reins. Hayward is going to be the team leader IMO and should continue to improve, he will start chanllenging for a spot on an all star team if given the leadership roll I think he will be given. How much Favors improves over the summer will tell me alot about how good he wants to become, Kanter is a hard worker and should prove to be a reliable go to scorer, hopefully his injury won’t slow him too much.
As far as the draft, I hope they have a player they know they can get that will fill the point guard position, I don’t think there is one particular player but it will probably be Larkin, Schroder or if they are lucky MCW with Isacc Austin as a sleeper. They could go for a 3rd big with one of their picks, using the 14th pick for a big could or likely would eliminate MCW , Larkin and Schroder , although Schroder does seem to be sliding alittle, Bigs at 21 could be scarce, maybe Gobert, Nogueira, Dienge, or Whithey could be available at 21. They would be interesting but projects.
If it were me I would take Giannis whether it was at 14 or 21 & then with the other pick I would take BPA.

The Jazz target a big whose best postion is the 4. As much as I love Enes and Favors they both are best on def when guarding 5s. I think Olynk would fit due to him being able to stretch the floor for Enes and Favors while being able to create in the post when on the court with Favors. He fits the high low game the Jazz have. Also his skill (Former High School pg) compliments Enes bruteness and favors and evans athleticism. I also feel that a wing who plays good d and and shoot (the jazz are an awful long ball team) would be awesome. This isnt the draft for a franchise pg but next year has two I like Harrison and Smart. Why not play youth and target a true franchise pg next year instead of experimenting with Larkin/MCW for 3-5 seasons only to figure out he isnt going to pan out as a starter. Also can we please get Burks in the starting lineup. Please!!
