Too often I hear this is a weak draft or that the next draft is going to be very strong. While one draft can be stronger than another, it is wrong to say a current draft is weak before any player had played in the NBA. I don’t even believe a draft class should be judged after a year……..or two. I think a draft class should be judged after the players drafted had played 3 or 4 years in the league. The basis for judging should be based on the following IMO:
I don’t include undrafted players b/c they are not part of a draft class.

    1. How many of the 60 players drafted are still in the league? Should be a good amount

    2. How many of the 60 players drafted play a role for there teams? The higher the # here the more successful the draft class

    3. How many of the 60 players drafted start for there teams? This to me is a great indicator on the draft as a whole because it will tell you how deep a draft class truly is.

    4. All-Star Appearances, MVPs, DPOYs, Scoring Titles, etc. This all tells you the possible Star-Power in a draft.

As for draft classes that are fair to be judged are any draft 2008 and before. Thoughts?

I think you can kind of guess after the secound year because player either show signs or fizzle in their second year especially more so now that high school players can not enter.

It would be at the very end of the 2nd year, more so than the beginning. Though I still think 3 full seasons is ideal to reflect, 2.5 is also acceptable. I just find after the 2nd year too early b/c guys develop a little later.

My personal opinion: I think we wait 3 seasons after a class is drafted. Of the 60 players drafted, I think 15 need to be good, now that we have at least 10-15 euros drafted in round 2, I would argue we have 45-50 legit picks and if 1/3 are alright, I think it’s good.

Your definition of good is too vague. If by good you mean starting, then I would expect about a dozen to start in there 3rd year, and then 15-18 starting in there 4th year. Having that you likely have a top draft class. IMO the 2008 draft has shown to be a very good draft so far.

    I’ll refine it then

I think we should have 10-20 good players

    • 2-8 Starters
    • 10-12 role players
    • 5-10 projects

The toughest thing is the role players from the projects, I think the biggest thing is we need a ideal class. I think we should maybe the 1982 draft class?

I definitely think 3-4 years is a good time to start making an assessment. And you want to look at all-star appearances even though alot of good players dont make it and some overrated players do (Jameer Nelson). All-star means you are playing good the first half of the season and usually on a decent team, so that up for debate, unless you are perennial all-star, then no argument. Then you want to look at key guys starting, like Richard Jefferson when he was on the Nets. He put up great numbers but wasnt an all-star, but yet he was big key player. Then there all the individual awards to conside Mvps etc. Lastly, you want to look at star power, how many of these guys are STARS or even SUPERSTARS.

I think stating #s is too limiting, it’s a wait and see process really. I think the 2008 class is materializing into a very good, and maybe 10-15 years from now we say great class. Already have an MVP (Derrick Rose), Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love made the All-Star team, which is 3 all-stars in 3 years, very good. Starters in Beasley, Mayo (shifted), Gallinari, Gordon, Lopez, Augustin, Hibbert, Ibaka. Also, Bayless, Thompson, McGee, Hickson, Hill, Arthur, Lee, Anderson, Chalmers, Jordan, Asik, Moute, Batum, etc. Is turning out to be a wonderful draft.
