aamir543ParticipantWith the season in the balances and not really knowing when it will start, I am going to do a Team Outlook for all thirty teams.(Sort of how JNixonIgyy does his college rankings, but probably not as in depth as his) I will be covering the Teams in the same order ESPN is covering the teams, by division.
Dallas Mavericks– After a magical playoff run, and a much deserved tittle for the team veterans, it is time to get serious. The fact of the mater is that they are still an old and slow team that beats you by outsmarting you. Now I know they arn’t too slow, as evidenced by their trashing of the Lakers, but if you go back and watch parts of the finals, you will see that whenever the Mavs turned the ball over, the Heat burned them in transition. Now I still like their chances of repeating, but they MUST resign Tyson Chandler and JJ Barea. Caron Butler is as good as those two, if not slightly better, but he is coming off a major injury, and there are two key things that Chandler and Barea each bring to the table. Chandler brings that Defensive intensity which can completly change a teams identity from a more offensive team, to a team that locks down on D. JJ Barea brings that much needed energy on to the floor. As soon as JJ comes into the game, they start puching the ball and get easy layups and open shots. It also helps them on D, that teams complety abandon their offensive game plan to try to post up their guard on Barea(How’d that work Andre Miller?). Now I am not sure whether they would be able to sign Chandler, Barea, and Butler, but for me, there is another element to their plans of the future.
If Rodrique Beaubois can turn into that quick energy player that the Mavs were hoping he could become, than losing Barea wouldn’t be the end of the world. One interesting thing I liked about the Mavs in the finals is that they wanted to push the ball in some of the games. And their effectivness in transition compounded with their usual excelence in the half court, they can play with anyone. I like their chances of repeating cause they are not going to have a mental/emotional breakdown, and can play slow and fast.
If Dirk can get off to the start he did last year (He was leading MVP talks before he got hurt) and The rest of their core can stay healthy for a majority of the season, than I see them as a top three in the West.
I look for them to continue to run the high post sets for Dirk, but to also run more and goes with him and Kidd and Terry. I saw that a couple times, and it is very effective, plus there could also be a fake to go along with that, cause I saw Nick Collison cheated on the fake quite a bit.
Their new pieces should complement the pieces they already have, and their roster is very deep
Kidd/Barea(FA)/Beaubois
Butler(FA)/Terry/Stevenson/Fernandez/Dominique Jones
Marion/Stojakovic/Corey Brewer
Nowitzki/Cardinal/
Chandler(FA)/Haywood/Mahinmi
They have 6 legitamite shooters, and almost all of their players have been through the playoffs several times, so although I can’t really make a prediction in stone right now, I expect the Mavs to be right in the thick of things.

NYK2010ParticipantLast I checked they beat the Thunder in 5 who are pretty young and fast.
The title run was without Butler, Beabouis and Haywood missed the last 4 games in the Finals too.
This lockout dragging will only help their older players, which are less than ppl think since Peja isn’t a starter. Also Kidd will get plenty of rest he averaged 33 mins a game in the regular season that will probably drop.
Lets say there are 50 regular season games instead of 82 thats 32 less for Kidd, Dirk, Marion, Butler, Terry.
Anytime you have Barrea, Beabouis, Terry and Marion on your team being slow isn’t a problem.
For years the Celtics who are older went deep into the playoffs.
They beat teams pretty easily that are much younger than them.
If anything motivation could be a problem but guys like Kidd & Dirk should help with that and know that a 2nd ring will help their legacy greatly.

Although the same could be said about replacing Butler with Fernandez. Mavs NEED Chandler. kaceyParticipant@NYK2010 your statement that a 50 game schedule would help the older players isn’t true. When you are trying to squeeze 50 games into about 5 months, then you will have alot of back to back games, and maybe even a couple 3 nighters in a row.
That doesn’t favor the older guys at all.
With that said, at the same time, a 50 game schedule will benefit a team that has great team chemistry and isn’t adding new pieces to their team. But as you both pointed out, the Mavs have a great deal of depth (especially if they resign JJ, Caron, and Tyson), so they would be alright.
I don’t see Peja coming back or Stevenson, so take them off that depth chart.

@symbol Do you really think Big Baby would get any PT playing behind Dirk? I like Davis, but I just think Barea has more value to the Mavs as a change of pace and two man guy with Dirk on the P&R then Davis has a backup big man. I was a big fan of Brandon Bass and he never got the minutes he probably deserved, Davis would be no different. Plus Ian looked solid in the spurts he played in the regular season and in the playoffs, I think the Mavs really like him and want to stick with him.
As great as Beabouis looked his rookie year, he still has plenty to prove before the Mavs should consider dumping Barea or letting him walk. But he does look pretty smooth offensively, I think he will definitely be given the chance to log some PT at the 1 this upcoming season.
