mikeyvthedonParticipantHello folks! As some of you may or may not know, I write a column on the site called NCAA Daily. Unfortunately, it does not have a comment section, which does not always allow for the interactive aspect that I very much enjoy. So, thought I would post it here from time to time, to get a discussion going on the hot topics in NCAA news. This one in particular is my Top 25 list I just created:

Have a feeling that many will have varying opinions and I know many have done lists of their own. Feel free to comment or discuss who you feel is too high or too low. I went out on a limb for a few of them, will gladly admit that. Just feel that I ranked them on where I could see them falling come March. Could definitely be wrong, but I find this discussion is great for easing the time until the season starts. So, feel free to leave your lists and leave comments, questions or view points. Only a few more days until the season! Should be a great one!

cuseflynn10ParticipantI can tell you really put a lot of effort into this column and pay attention to all college basketball. I mostly stick to Syracuse, but I’ll watch other teams when I get the chance.
As for Syracuse, I would be happy with a #3 ranking. We always seem to get underranked in the preseason and end up higher than what we are projected. #3 may be a little high, but I think this could be a really defensive dominant zone. With a 6’4 senior in Triche and a 6’6 Carter-Williams at the top of the 2-3 with a backline of Fair, Christmas, and Coleman, I think we could force a lot of turnovers and out rebound any team in the country. Fair is a hustle player that could chip in 6-8 RPG and hopefully Christmas and Coleman will be ready to step up their games.
Realistically, I think this team could earn its way up to #3, but I don’t know if we’re there yet. Ask me again after Friday’s opening night matchup against #20 SDST. If they blow them out, then I can see them being #3. If they win by a small margin, then their #9 ESPN/AP ranking is pretty much spot on.

mikeyvthedonParticipantJust feel that Cuse will get there. Doubt they get off to the hot start that they did last year, but I think this is a team that will be really tough in the tournament. Feel that Cuse has indeed been slept on. Personally would leave to see them play UK this year, think that Cuse could definitely come out on top. This team has some pieces and definite depth up front. Really think Carter-Williams has a big year, he contributes all over the place. Think that 3-9 this year are pretty darn close together.

mikeyvthedonParticipantAfter the job Bill Self did last year, I give him a ton of credit. Felt like he was the coach of the year and I think that he has a talented team. Their new additions should be huge, like both Ben McLemore and Perry Ellis quite a bit. Also, I tend to not be the biggest Duke fan (people who know me away from this site may feel that is a major understatement), but they will once again be a very tough team. They have senior leadership and a nice stable of guards.
Honestly though, I feel I had these two teams lower than most people. Saw your list, it was bold as hell. You loved Louisville last year and now have them 5? I think they have a chance to be even better this year, definite championship contenders. NC State is good and I contemplated putting them as high as 3, just feel they really lack size in the front court and depth. Give you props for your bold choices, just have some slightly different ones.
When it comes to Kansas and Duke, hard to go against that consistency and I think their rosters justify at least being in the neighborhood of where they are ranked. Think Baylor beats Kansas for the Big 12? Kansas just seems to own that conference, think they have some flat out tougher players than Baylor. That is the thing with Kansas and Duke, their attention to detail and willingness to do the little things tend to be more prevalent than most college teams.

I actually had each of my 3 computers confiscated by the police due to my knucklehead granddaughter, whom I live with, posting nude pics of her ex-boyfriend’s penor. The police issued a sort of ‘Cease and Desist’ and refused to replace my computers. I couldn’t afford a new computer (was laid off by my massage parlor for allegedly fondling a female patient, which by the way, is absolutely not true). Just recently got a job as a substitute gym teacher at our elementary school in Laramie, Wyoming, because they were desperate.

Dale WorthingtonParticipantGood points, Mikey. That was pretty impressive seeing Rock Chalk go to the Championship game with a lack of true impact players last year. I think they’re really gonna take a hit, though, without TRob and Taylor. But who knows? I may very well be wrong.
With Duke, I see Mason Plumlee, and some talented young freshmen and sophomores, very few proven commodities. And lettuce beef cereal, Seth "Pork" Curry is a point guard in name only. Dude isn’t a playmaker. But he can occasionally drop buckets.
Dropping Louisville to 5 looks like an indictment, I know (esp. given where I was on them last year). But it’s really just me being EXTREMELY high on the 4 programs ahead of them (3 if UCLA loses Bazz for the season). The Ville is basically a more experienced version of last year’s squad, except Blackshear essentially replacing Kuric. I think they’re still elite.
I think NC State will excel in the frontcourt (in addition to the backcourt). Howell is 6’8 (which is about average for a post player in college hoops) but the dude is thick, crashes the boards, and he BANGS. He’s an invaluable piece to the elite athletes around him. Then you factor in CJ Leslie and TJ Warren who are both 6’8/6’9 as well…they’re not true post players (SF/PF types, although Leslie had great rebounding numbers last year), but they will get their boards, and will be extremely hard to defend at 6’8/6’9 when they’re on the wing. Scott Wood is 6’6 at the 3 and he’s one of the best shooters in college basketball.

That’s what separates NC State for me…Lorenzo Brown. To have an elite playmaker who’s also 6’5 and very athletic.

Dale WorthingtonParticipantI’ve got Mizzou as a potential Final Four squad.
People are sleeping on them because they lost 3 starters but they have an absurdly strong crop of transfers coming in.
Flip Pressey is an elite playmaker at the point, Michael Dixon is back on the wing, and Keion Bell and Earnest Ross both were Captain Drain-O at their previous schools.
And now they finally have a post with Bowers back (hopefully he’s fully good to go) and Alex Oriakhi, who played a major role in UConn winning the Championship 2 years ago.
I also have UNLV is a potential Final Four squad.
I’ve never seen their starting PG play to be honest but the guy Marshall put up really nice numbers last year.
You have Roscoe Smith from UConn and Bryce Jones from USC coming in on the wing.
You have Mikey Moser at 6’8 who absolutely dominated last year (can play at the 3 and the 4)…is a CJ Leslie-type…averaged 14 and 10.5 last year.
Then you have 5-star recruits Anthony Bennett (can also play the 3) and Khem Birch down low. Damn son. That’s too much talent for TV, baby!
I also think Pitt will be great and will return to past form. People are getting too caught up with how bad they were last year. That was an anomaly.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI like UNLV a lot too, well aware what they bring to the table. Was impressed with Moser, but he was also fairly inconsistent. Like Bennett too, he is tough, just has been constantly injured which is a slight concern. Very good team though, which is why I had them high.
Michael Dixon is much more of a scoring guard than a classical "wing" per se, plus his being suspended makes you wonder what’s up. Missouri definitely is another team too watch, though. Their guard stable is very impressive and they actually have some bigs (well, a couple in Oriakhi and Bowers, plus a wildcard in Tony Criswell). They have potential, as did last years team before it lost to Norfolk State. Had them in the Final Four in my bracket last year, lol.
Dale, as much as I see NC State having an excellent 7 deep, could see issues. CJ Leslie still has yet to gain any real weight. For as explosive of an athlete as he may be, that has to hurt against some comp with meat on their bones. They have three guys who are 6-8 as their PF/C rotation. Their guards are quite good and Scott Wood is an excellent shooter, just am kind of worried by the potential lack of size they may have everywhere other than Lorenzo Brown running point. Still feel they are the ACC favorites, but this was what prevented me from ranking them higher. I could definitely be wrong, just was a gut feeling.
