greg freakin oden

the good: 12 boards, 5 blocks
the bad: 2 pts, 5 fouls
the ugly: 7 turnovers

once again I have no clue what to think about oden. Bust? Potential superstar? Im leaning toward bust simply because he fouls out of games before he has a chance to do much.

Oden

He fouled out before doing anything? Those 12 rebounds and 5 blocks is nothing to scoff at. He was solid not forcing anything and trying to impact the game defensively. Thats all he needs to do right now.

i said a couple of posts

i said a couple of posts that oden doesnt do anything that prysbilla doesnt so people need to stop hyping him up he will be a role player for his whole career and wont anchor a team to a championship. if he wins one he will be a role player not making a huge diff. he's a bust will NEVER be like russell or robinson those are some of the best centers ever he's not even brook lopez just cuz he has physical attributes doesnt mean he will be good look at darko if we go by measurements and what ifs everybody has star potential. should have taken durant portlant will admit sooner or later they made a mistake

True this is what Oden has to do

If Oden can do that the Blazers will probably live with it but only 26 mins if he can limit his To's would be great.
Time to face the fact he's not going to be David Robinson closer to Ben Wallace or Mutumbo would be fine.
The fouls not a problem as long as Pryzbilla isn't in foul trouble, no wonder they made such a big offer to Millsap.
Roy had an off night shooting, they had 26 turnovers and still won, the Rockets must really suck.

Bynum had great game on offense but only 1 block and Kaman, Camby put up pretty big numbers.
Not sure how he plays once Gasol gets back though.

This is what Odoen's 2nd year playing and Bynum's 5th.
Bynum is better offensively hands down.
Jordan is raw but he has talent.

More importantly than any of these guys was Agent Zero sent a message to the league I'm back

Main reason they beat Mavs in Dallas tonight was him, Butler didn't play well no Jamison and Miller had what 6 pts.
Also he kept Jason Kiss in check to only 6 asts and 4 pts.

Greg is a monster! 26minutes

Greg is a monster! 26minutes 12rebounds 5blks, even Hoawrd hadly can get it, and if blazers nedds just defense then they are lucky, but offense today was bad, very bad..but i'm not worring, he will be fine, he can score alot when he gets his shots.just wait

Eh

Oden's still puzzling to me. He did some great things and then some horrible ones. If he cannot learn to stay out of foul trouble, he is going to severely hurt how effective he can be. I'm sure McMillan would love to play him more than 26 minutes. Imagine if he got an extra 10 minutes of time just by staying out of foul trouble. Overall not a bad game and he is doing what he needs to do, EXCEPT for protecting the ball. Guys who don't initiate plays or handle the ball should never have 7 turnovers ever. Even though he did some things well, keep in mind that he was playing a very offensively challenged Rockets team and he's easily the tallest guy on the floor. I'm going to need to see some more games out of him to give a more accurate opinion. On the bright side of things Portland has to be happy with the win and having their two centers grab 22 rebounds and end up with 7 blocks. You can do a lot if you can control the paint.

It's crazy!!!!

It's crazy to think Greg Oden had terrible season openers!!! Damn that boy! last season against the Lakers: 0 points in 13 minutes with a foot injury... That was a very ugly debut for a number 1 pick... Ehh

Rockets: 2 points 12 rebounds 5 fouls and 7 turnovers? Did I read that right? SEVEN? As in the one number that's after 6? 7 blocks would have been good but turnovers for a Center? That's UGLY!

Still, one game... not yet a judgment on what line he is but for the past two seasons, he has had ugly debuts... Geeezzz...

It's no big deal, Aldridge

It's no big deal, Aldridge can do the offensive work in the post. Greg doesn't necessarily have to score. People just expect him to because he was a #1 pick. 12 boards and 5 blocks is okay, and the Blazers won, so i don't think it's a big deal.

some of you guys are callin

some of you guys are callin oden a bust but im guessing you didnt watch the game. the blazers are set up so that on any givin night they could have 6 players step up to score 20 points. they dont need more scoring! as long as the play defense they are gona have a chance to win because they can get baskets. this is where oden comes in. he did a great job inhaling rebounds and indimidating shots. they gave him 5 blocks but it could have been 7 ( they took 2 away in the box score but i was watching the replay and at least 1 of them was bogus) and that doesnt even begin to show the number of shots that he affected or the broken sets that the rockets had to bring back out and reset on because oden was holding down the block. ill be the first to admit that his 7 turnovers was nasty to watch but i dont think he will have that many very often. and the 5 fouls? he wasnt in foul trouble until late in the 3rd when he picked up a couple ticky tacky offensive fould and had to sit down, but all in all he did alot better then last year at moving his feet and not bumping the guards as they got into the paint. he didnt even look to score. before the game nate challenged oden to be the defensive stopper and thats what oden did. and 12 boards isnt to shabby either watch for greg to keep improving, espescially on offense as his teammates start looking for him more under the basket

It's one game. Oden took

It's one game. Oden took three shots people. His team really didn't look to get him the ball, except during isolation post ups... Which, though he's improved there, that's really not his game yet. Roy, Miller, etc need to penetrate and then drop it to Oden for easy baskets and dunks. I keep saying this, but they really don't use Oden as well as they could.

The key was he did other things even though he wasn't getting looks offensively. He had 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. He blocked 5 and altered 10.

The seven turnovers didn't look good, but he's not a high turnover prone player. He'll take care of that next game.

couldnt agree with you more

couldnt agree with you more tezo, right now oden is the key to the blazers defense and he did his job on the boards grabbing 12 and protecting the rim blocking 5 shots. he is freakin strong and quick and athletic, his offense will come but right now he is pretty dependent on his teammates to create open looks for him, mostly on drive and dish or pick and rolls and put backs. he is also a really good free throw shooter for a big guy so he can and will convert at the line after he gets hacked. scoring is only 1 part of the game and oden does alot of things on the other end of the floor to put his team in a position to win just give him a chance he is finally healthy

I don't care how many points Greg Oden scores. His legacy is not to be a scorer, it never was. He's too uncoordinated to be a great scorer. He basically has to be the guy that gets put backs and lobs. As long as he is converting at least a 50% of the field goals he takes, the team should be happy.

I think some people on the forum are giving him too much of a pass for the 7 turnovers. Surely everyone here understands how difficult it is to commit 7 turnovers, let alone if you are a 7 footer that really isn't part of the offensive gameplan. The fouls are also still a problem. He's getting the blocks, but he's not playing solid defense. Smart teams are going to keep him in foul trouble until he gets his defense right.

I don't think anyone is

I don't think anyone is giving him a pass for the seven turnovers. He's not a turnover proned player, so I expect him to correct that next game.

This team is still developing chemistry (Oden, Webster and Miller) and working on their team defense as a whole. It's only one game.

I took more positives than negatives.

Greg Oden will alleviate his turnovers when he consistently keeps the ball above his head. I can't imagine he got a lot of touches except on rebounds, especially on the offensive end where he'd be looking to get a put back. However his game changing defense and control of the boards is a great sign. All his problems can be helped by experience and eventually he'll get, at worst, and handful of points off easy dunks and put backs. At best he develops a low post game and gets 18+ points a game. But what I really took away from this game is that he has the potential to lead the league in blocks and rebounds if he improves his very fixable flaws.

he looked ok...

you guys do know that three (maybe four, i can't remember exactly) of those turnovers, and fouls, were silly offensive fouls that were only called because he was so much bigger than the rockets frontcourt... a frontcourt that is very pesky and kept trying to flop around him, and the refs screwed oden by calling the fouls...

people are jut not

people are jut not understanding that oden isnt a offensive player. but always want to give excuses to why hes not scoring...lakers have a couple of players that on any given night can also have 20 ut bynum can also get it too because he can score he has moves..oden doesnt have moves..he has under the basket power dunk...its liek a arguement i had with one of ya'll about how oden dominated hs and college but they didnt wanna hear that he wasnt going against any tru nba centers and barely any off the bench type nba power fowards.. oden can rebound and blk shots and thats good thats all the blazers need him to to..but for those who expect him to score alot ( or be a third option on offense liek someone on here argued with me about ) then ya'll are gonna be very dissapointed..hes still pretty raw on offense...and please stop comparing him to d.howard because he no where near him...also dont foget the big men he faced this past game was chuck hayes and david anderson...nuff said

G.O.

Fist off it is game 1 of the season and he is still healthy. lets talk about the inconsistency after maybe ten games. Second, the bad is that he had only 2 points against david anderson(who?), chuck hayes(6'6"), luis scola(6'9" and not a strong defender), and carl landry(6'9"). I mean they are nba players but really, 2 points. what is he gonna do going up against dwight howard, shaq, bynum, or even kendrick perkins. The 12 boards and 5 blocks are to be expected against maybe the smallest team in the league. I do expect thoses numbers from him though. But he needs to get better on the offensive end or yes he will be labeled a bust. But if he can get 12-14ppg with those 12 boards and 2-3 blocks i think he will merit his selection as the number 1 overall pick.

quincy are you half

quincy are you half retarded? are you really judging oden on how he played last year? when he was a rookie, overweight, not in game shape, and still 1 year away from a completely healed knee and getting his athleticism back? keep talkin your trash you just make it obvious that youv never actually watched oden play in a game. if you did youd know that oden gets alot of bs fouls because he is so much bigger and stronger than alot of the players hes facing, only differance is that this year hes in shape, got his legs back, and is quick on his feet again. you and everyone else will be choking on your words soon enough

i watch him..hes never had a bunch of post moves and he gets fouls because hes foul prone..he doesnt move hi feet quick enough or he mis times things..hes in better shape this year and still picked up 5 fouls....and where is the trash i talked?..he is raw offensively..im not the only person that says it..jim rome has said it..barkley kenny smith even his own coach nate has said it..thats why he says he wants oden to focus on rebounding and blks which he is pretty good at..so where am i hating on him?..like i said ive watched many games with oden and he has alot of work to do on offense a far as post moves..right now he can power dunk under the basket..i guess we all are haters for pointing out the obvious

foul prone? point the finger

foul prone? point the finger at steve blake for letting his get by him at will so that oden is the last line of defense. and maybe he wasnt moving his feet fast enough because he was heavy, in poor game shape, and just coming off of major surgery. and are you serious ryan cook? he is way stronger, mobile and athletic. pryz is pretty much no threat on the offensive end where oden gets doubled and trippled because once he gets position he can dunk over you. pryz cant do that. and oden might already be a better deffender at age 21 and in his 2nd season. he's got soft hands, good feet and once he getss some post moves down will be a force on the offensive end as well as defensive

see that excuse works with

see that excuse works with people who dont watch the team..ive watched them and oden gets his fouls from one on one mostly not help d...did you watch him lastnight..how many of those fouls were because steve blake let his man go past?...and if that was even the case(which its not) how come prizbilla doesnt pick up those ame fouls?..blakes defene doesnt get better when he comes in. the reason..oden is foul prone..happens to alot of young big men..how bout we dont make excuses for every flaw oden has.....if he doesnt score its cuz they dont pass him the ball, if he fouls its because some other guy didnt play defense, if he turns the ball over 7 times like last night it because someone else didnt catch it..re watch the game last night and some game last season and youll see he is the reason he picks up fouls not blake....nash is one of the worst defenders in the leauge yet when guards drive past him there big men dont pick up alot of fouls...as a big man you have to learn not to fould when a guy comes down the lane. he is way stronger and faster and athletic and all that other stuff then priz but that even more of a problem if hes all that more but doesnt produce all that more then him

Be careful what you say...

Be careful what you say... Last season, this same undersized Rockets team, gave the Lakers all they could handle and took them to seven games. Hayes may not be tall, but he's strong as a bull and has a low center of gravity. Landry too.

Oden is raw, but he's improved offensively. It's one game. 81 more to go. He'll show improvement. We're talking about a 21 year old player here, not a 31 year old one.

Who else will be the number

Who else will be the number three option in the starting lineup Quincey? No way will Blake and Webster have more total field goal attempts than Greg Oden this season. By the mid-point of this season, Oden will establish himself as the number three option. It's only one game Quincey. How many times do I have to say this?

Bynum's OWN COACH said the

Bynum's OWN COACH said the same thing! Does that mean he's not the third option in the Lakers' starting lineup? NO. Just because Coach Nate said he wants Oden to focus on rebounding and defense, doesn't mean he won't eventually be the team's third option. It's only ONE game.

quincy just cause nate is

quincy just cause nate is saying he wants oden to focus on defense doesnt mean that oden wont get touches in the post. and how many 21 year old 2nd year bigmen have a polished post game? the fact is oden is already dominant on defense and rebounding and has all the tools (size strength speed athleticism hands) to turn into a strong 2nd or 3rd option. and to say oden is foul prone again this season by watching last nights game agaisnt the rockets is stupid. he could bump hays with his hip and send him flying i think oden will actually be better against the taller players where he can use his quickness and power to his advantage

you are saying what i said

you are saying what i said earlier..hes a good rebounder and can blk shot..thats gonna be his main thing to do this year..coring wont be his main thing..roy lamarcus, outlaw, webster will score more then him on any given night..hes just not there on offense yet and has a ways to go. people on here get offended by that but it the truth..whcih i why i say bynum and lopez are better right now..bynum is 21 now and i more polished by far on offense andhe was more polished last year....like people in the nba say..BILL RUSSELL..end being a very very good defender rebounder

For all the fools who

For all the fools who say
Oden is a bust..
Y'all don't know anything about basketball..Oden played 1 year of major college ball using only 1 hand..And helped lead his team to the final game..Oden rookie stats are very similar to Dwight Howard's rookie year..Howard doesn't have a great offensive game either..But he does have great confidence..Something Oden lacks. For 1 thing when he gets the ball, he holds it too low...When a player try to steal it or take it away..Oden commits a silly foul trying to retrieve it..Plus his footwork has to improve..And he doesn't look like he's enjoying himself out there..When he gets the joy of playing back..He'll be the player everyone was hoping he'll become...Maybe he should listen to some hardcore RAP MUSIC to pump himself up..............He looks like he just woke up..And doesn't have a clue of whuts goin on

howard is and was better

howard is and was better then oden during his rookie and second year...oden came in after one year of college and didnt play till his second year after injury which equals howards 3rd year...stop comparing him to howard cuz howard is better ..oden int a bust hes a very good rebounder and shot blocker ..his defense is ok sometimes but lacks other times..hes foul prone still brings the ball down too low and his foot wokr i still bad..howard at that age didnt have post moves either but he had better foot work and kept the ball high..im not sure why people are calling oden a bust because hes not..he still has a chance to be a bill russell /dikembe mutombo...and he enjoys playing h just not that good yet..still developing so lets stop giving him excuses and face the fact that he needs more time to develop and get it all together..the talent is there and he does thing well..,hes not deandre jordan, he has a good work eithic and can do somethings well..just still raw

I'm doubting Webster as a third option... Fernandez would be better.

As for Oden, his footwork is fine. Its the speed which he initiates his move, or reacts to the opponents offense, that needs work. Even though his body is developing and is game ready, his mind, his reactions, his movements and his court awareness are all going to have to be brought up to speed through in-game reps. 5-10 games in, he will be a consistent double double.

And for the person who asked whats the difference between Pryzbilla and Oden, the difference is Oden can perfrom on Pryzbilla's level at Oden's worst. At Odens best, which will be shown over time, he is a true dominant center.
