It has been, for the most part, a largely forgettable 2011-12 college basketball season for the Pac 12 Conference. But the NCAA tournament selection committee’s decision to include just 2 teams (Colorado and California) and leave out the regular season champion Washington Huskies (14-4) was a huge slap in the face to the Conference (especially with a team like BYU getting in).

Fighting for respect has become a running theme in recent years, but at least last season the conference was represented with a top 25 program and a very special All-American talent that grabbed the nation’s attention in the form of Arizona and their star forward Derrick WIlliams.

This year, barring some remarkable NCAA tourney run from California or Colorado, this year will end with a whimper and nary a reason to look back upon it other then maybe as the year a once proud UCLA program became a national mockery thanks in large part to a Sports Illustarted article bemoaning the percieved ineptitude of the coaching staff to maintain control of the players.

But with all that said, fans out West did get to see an intriguing freshman break onto the scene in Washington’s [player: Tony Wroten] who both dazzled and dumbfounded his own fan base with his vast array of skills and occasionaly questionable decision making, sometimes on the very same play. Unfortunately they won’t have the opportunity to see him and his talented teammates play in the Big Dance.

The conference saw the addition of two new programs in Utah and Colorado, including an amazing Conference tourney title run that put the Buffalos into the big dance.

We got to see an epic battle between Stanford and Oregon State that included 4 overtimes with a back and forth tug of war down the stretch that surely left everyone involved, both on the court and at home, exhausted and emtionally drained.

We got to see an end to the college career of a couple of long time Pac mainstays in Cal’s [player: Jorge Gutierrez], Arizona’s [player: Kyle Fogg], Stanford’s [player: Josh Owens] and the brief but fantastic end of senior transfer Devoe Joseph’s college days as they winded down in Eugene Oregon.

The conference will rebound. The talent will grow. And the national exposure and respect will return. Who knows, it is March and maybe we will get to see a miraculous run in the coming weeks. Isn’t that the fun part of this time of year?

And now, for the conference awards:

Player of the Year:

[player: Jorge Gutierrez], Cal Bears

Gutierrez earned this award every bit as much for his play on the defensive end as the offensive end. The senior gaurd from Chihuahua, Mexico did have a bit of bad stretch to close the season that made this decision a lot closer with Oregon’s Devoe Joseph right on his heels. However Jorge was the most valuable and displayed intangibles that go beyond the boxscore and will be a headache for whoever the Bears face in the NCAA tournament. He is a relentless defender who isn’t afraid of physical contact and often gets under his opponents skin with his aggressive physical approach to that end of the court. Offensively, Jorge is a very good ball handler and can play either gaurd spot where he looks to make plays for his teammates as often as for himself. He has an excellent mid range game and likes to stay tight coming off screens looking for openings around the elbow instead of flaring all the way out to the three point line. A great kid, Gutierrez is as much an emotional leader as anyone out West and there’s going to be a huge void left behind on the Bears team after he plays his last game. Despite his lack of a position, he’ll have a chance to get drafted and make an NBA roster next year.

Freshman of the Year:

Tony Wroten, Washington Huskies

The highly ranked recruit probably got as much national recognition as anyone from the Pac 12 as he is widely considered a sure fire first rounder if he so chooses to leave after this season. He has an intriguing skill set that has many believeing his potential is on par with the best of them. He has the size of a sg, the ball handling and passing of a pg, and one on one abilites that leave many an opponent yelling for help immediately followed by checking to make their shoes are tied tight. He gets into the lane at will and has a long reach and stride that allows him to get shots off in the paint over taller defenders. However, Wroten could really use another year of nurturing at the college level. He shot an abysmal 18% from three and 57% from the free throw line and turned the ball over 4 times  per contest. His most recent Pac 12 tourney performance illustrates both Tony’s abilities and flaws perfectly. In that game versus Oregon State, Tony was unstoppable finshing with 29 points and 7 rebounds and 3 assists while carving up the defense. However, with the game on the line, he proceeded to miss 4 fts in the final minute and the Huskies lost the game and in turn missed the NCAA tourney.

Pac 12 First team:

Brock Motum, Washington State (18.1ppg, 6.5rpg, 55fg%)

Brock’s back got stronger as the weight of the team got heavier to carry. As leading scorer Faisal Aden went down with a season ending injury, Brock was needed more the ever to provide offense and his game picked up immediately with him dropping 20+ regularly from that point on. He has one more year left and is only a winning team record away from being heavily in the mix of conference player of the year discussion.

Devoe Joseph, Oregon Ducks (16.6ppg, 4rpg, 3apg)

Devoe made a late push to take the Conference player of the year award. The lightning quick shooting gaurd was hot late and had the Ducks right in the middle of the pac 12 regular season championship race right up until the final weekend. He is an excellent scorer and if the Ducks (22-9) happen to get an invite to the big dance, he’s one to keep an eye on.

[player: Jorge Gutierrez], Cal Bears (13.2ppg, 5.4rpg, 4.1apg)

[player: Terrence Ross], Washington Huskies (15.3ppg, 6.5rpg)

Ross has been in the discussion as a potential first rounder all season and thus expectations were high that he would show a few more flashes of brilliance and game taking over ability then he did this season. However, while the monster scoring games were few, he also was only held to single digits 3 times this whole season showing consistency. He has excellent one or two dribble moves where he can get his opponent off balance and then pull up for shots fading in any direction that look NBA level. He also does a good job around the paint rebounding and showed improved toughness finishing and posting up opponents.

[player: Tony Wroten], Washington Huskies (16.7ppg, 5rpg, 3.6apg)

Second team:

[player: Allen Crabbe], Cal Bears (15.3ppg, 5.7rpg)

Crabbe had 20 point per game potential in my eyes this year and came up well short of that number thus didn’t show the improvement as a sophomore I was hoping for. He is still an excellent shooter with a quick release and nba range and has a variety of mid range shots in his arsenal. But it would be nice to see him get all the way to the rim a little more often and force himself to ft line.

[player: Andre Roberson], Colorado Buffaloes (11.5ppg, 11.2rpg, 2.1 blks)

Roberson is a phenomanal athlete and can make plays around the basket at both ends of the court. He led the confernce in rebounding at over 11 a game whcih is remarkable for a natural sf. He still has a long ways to go in terms of polishing up his perimter skills, but it is refreshing that he doesnt use college games as a NBA showcase of sorts jacking up shots or forcing the issue. Instead he is very comfortable playing within a team concept and doing the dirty work which is a large reason why his Colorado squad will be playing this weekend for the conference championship and an automatic bid to the tournament.

[player: Jared Cunningham], Oregon State Beavers (17.8ppg, 3.8rpg, 2.8apg, 2.5stls)

Just as I get done praising Andre Roberson’s athleitc abilities, I come to Cunningham who has no peers in that regard in the pac 12. Cunningham can jump out of the gym and gets out and runs in the open court well. He is still a below average perimter shooter and needs work on his ball handling as well if he wants to truly get to another level as a player. But his defense is fantastic and he actually saw a solid dip in his steals per game falling all the way down to 2.5 steal per this year after being around 3 last year.

-[player: Kyle Fogg], Arizona Wildcats (13.5ppg, 44%3pt)

I had high expectations for Fogg entering this season and expected him to be leaned on heavily to make up for the departure of Derrick Williams. But Fogg got off to a bit of a slow start and was all over the place with his scoring numbers on a nightly basis folowing up 20 point games with games in single digits routinely. He did pick it up late and made a  push to make the Conference first team with his play down the stretch. His shooting and defense are his strong points.

Solomon Hill, Arizona Wildcats (13ppg, 8rpg, 2.6apg 50%fg)

Hill was only half a point away from having led the Wildcats in all three major statistical categories (points, rebounds and assists). Hill is a combo forward who has the strength to bang down low but skill wise prefers playing a little farther out around the three point line. He is a truly versatile player who can be used in any number of ways, inside/outside, either initiating the offense for others or finishing plays himself.

3rd team:

[player: Chasson Randle], Stanford Cardinal (13.8ppg, 3.3rpg, 43%3pt)

Randle is sg in a pg’s body and can get hot especially from deep where half of his field goal attempts came from beyond the three point line this season. He has occasional big offensive outbursts which make him the most dnagerous weapon on the Cardinal’s squad. He’s only a freshman and is someone to really watch out for going forward.

Devon Collier, Oregon State Beavers (13.2ppg, 5.2rpg, 61%fg)

Collier has been putting up numbers all season, but it took a little while for me to go from being plesantly surprised to expecting his solid out puts nightly. He has established himself as a key piece to the Beavers frontcourt going forward and can play either frontcourt position. His body would be better suited as a sf where he is on the skinny side, but his skills are playing in the paint. He prtoects the rim and finshes off plays well as evidenced by his 61%fg shooting. He fits in well with the teams athletic get out and run style.

Jesse Perry, Arizona Wildcats (12ppg, 7.5rpg)

While Hill and Fogg got more recognition then Perry this year for the Wildcats, It was Jesse that was arguably the teams most irreplaceable and important piece. He provided all the toughness inside on an undersized squad and defended well. He is only 6-7, but full of energy and will make opposing teams big men have stay focused at all times.

[player: Justin Cobbs], Cal Bears (12.8ppg, 5apg, 42%3pt)

Cobbs really came out of nowhere for me this season. He finshed strong and instead of playing second fiddle to all confernce talents in gutierrez and Crabbe, Cobbs instead played with tons of aggressiveness and pushed the pace himself as opposed to just trying to fit in. He has excellent one on one skills and decent size for a pg and can get into the paint and put pressure on defenses.

Lazeric Jones, UCLA Bruins (13.5ppg, 4.1apg)

Jones got off to a horrible start to begin the year and many who had high expectations for the Bruins probably wrote him off early and never came back wondering how’s he been doing. But the senior pg, who was former backcourt mates with Derrick Rose in highschool, stayed aggressive and didnt let the early slump affect him mentally and despite all the negatives the Bruin program went through this season, Jones was a solid part of a team that played well down the stretch, maybe even better then their final 19-14 record would indicate.
