NBA Comparison: Greg Stiemsma

Strengths: Skilled big man with intriguing versatility … Berggren’s shooting range is what sets him apart from other would-be power forward prospects as he can shoot the three-pointer with consistency … Possesses deceptive athleticism, as evidenced by 29.8 inch no-step vert at the Nets workout and by his myriad driving, leaping dunks at Wisconsin … Berggren is the embodiment of a typical scrappy Bo Ryan hustle player…Has good timing on his shot blocking and averaged 2.1 blocks per game last year, good for first in the Big Ten…Reduced his fouls per game by 0.9 from junior to senior year, despite an increase in minutes.  He has done a better job of going straight up and down, which has helped increase his block total…In college, Berggren was not afraid to put the ball on the floor and drive it from the perimeter…Possesses soft touch and good footwork around the rim, giving him inside-outside scoring versatility…Good shooting stroke…Good at playing within an offense.  Does a good job of setting effective screens and getting open looks…A confident shooter who isn’t afraid to fire away when guarded too loosely on the perimeter…Played center for Wisconsin, one of the nation’s most efficient defenses …

Weaknesses: Berggren may be too undersized, both in height and girth, to compete with NBA big men…For a big man who’s main weapon is his range, the 25% shooting from 3PT range is alarming…Cumbersome in movement; lacks quickness…Somewhat thin frame…Is already age 23, which limits his already-low upside…The sheer size disadvantage he will face in the NBA will neutralize most of the offensive advantages he had in college…Also may struggle to defend bigger post players…Unable to effectively finish through contact…Nothing to write home about as far as rebounding is concerned (6.9 RPG last season)…Never shot a high FG% in college…Could face coul trouble at the NBA level due to his small frame…

Overall: Berggren could provide a team with an experienced stretch 4, but his age, and his lack of size, shot consistency, and fluidity will likely keep him from being drafted…
