AUSTIN, Texas -- Myck Kabongo was late to his own announcement.
But, as it turned out, the point guard decided he was not going to be early when it came to becoming a professional.
The Texas freshman announced he would return to the team for his sophomore season.
"I'm more than excited about being here next year," Kabongo told the Longhorn Network. "I think that being at Texas is the best thing for me."
Kabongo averaged 9.6 points per game, 5.2 assists per game, three rebounds a game and shot 39 percent. The point guard was considered a late first round to second round pick if he were to turn pro. So there was some uncertainty as it pertained to his future and the NBA.
Kabongo told LHN when he ultimately did make the decision to go to the NBA, he wanted to be more of a sure thing instead of a uncertain prospect.
"It's about being ready," he said. "I want to be someone who is ready to play and contribute at the next level.
"Being at Texas is really the best thing for me," he added.
It might not be the best thing for teammate J'Covan Brown. The junior is currently debating whether he should forgo the final year of his eligibility or not. Brown has denied reports that he has already made his decision to turn pro.
Kabongo said he has not put any pressure on Brown either way.
"I'm just telling him as a friend and a teammate you do what is best for you," Kabongo said. "That is all I can do."
The deadline to declare with the NBA is April 29.
With Kabongo returning, Texas will have one of the stronger sophomore classes in the country. But what they do not have is depth or size in the middle. Texas does have a commitment from 6-foot-10 Cameron Ridley, one of the nation's top prospects. Ridley has yet to sign his letter of intent. He could sign it as early as April 11.
As for Kabongo, he is ready to get back to work. Individual workouts at Texas began Monday. Kabongo times his announcement for Monday so that his teammates were not left with any indecision about the future.
"I made a lot of promises sitting down in March, me and my teammates watching those [NCAA tournament] games," he said. "This is something that we talked about being there next year. We take great pride in wearing that Texas uniform. We see ourselves next year playing deep in March."
