SAN JOSE — Does anyone in Las Vegas expect UNLV star freshman Anthony Bennett to return to school next season?
“Not too many sane people,” teammate Mike Moser said Wednesday on the eve of the Runnin’ Rebels’ NCAA tournament game against Cal at HP Pavilion.
Bennett, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound forward and the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, is a considered a consensus top-10 pick in the NBA draft.
So, he’s gone after this season?
“Oh definitely,” Moser said. “Anthony, he’s been great this season, playing like every game is his last. He’s one of the most mature freshmen I’ve ever played with.”
Bennett may already know what he’s planning to do, but he’s not saying.
“It’s a hard decision,” he said. “I like the city of Vegas, I like the fans, the coaching staff is great, teammates. I’m just going to take that into consideration when I make my decision.”
At some point, if he’s convinced he will be picked high enough, isn’t the decision almost out of his hands?
“I wouldn’t say I have to make it because I can get better if I stay another year,” Bennett said. “If I leave, I’ve got to support the family. It’s still a big decision for me. I’m trying not to think about it right now.”
