I found this article interesting, i was wondering, is it his fault or is it because of the teams hes been on?

I think it’s moreso his fault.  He is the star player and he’s been on some pretty good teams.  We love to poke fun at T-Mac but he never had a team as good as Carmelo’s Nuggets and Knicks.  (or were never healthy)

Carmelo has played with good players almost his entire career, from Iverson to Billups, prime-Andre Miller, prime-Camby, somewhat prime-Kenyon, prime-Nene, Stoudemire.  He’s always had good teams, he’s just never been able to lead them well enough.

I’m sure I’ll get negged on this one because of all the ‘Melo lovers out there, but it’s his issue. Lebron won with a crappy Cavs team. Heck, he even took them to the Finals in ’07 against a clearly superior Spurs team. True superstars win postseason games even with a bad squad.

‘Melo is a selfish, ball-hogging, isolation basketball player. Everyone got their touches with Lin at the point. Since he’s been out, it’s been back to the ‘Melo show. He’s a phenomenal player who get’s great numbers but lacks team success. Tremendous talent, but doesn’t play defense which wins championships.

I’ll take Lin and his ball movement, and Tyson’s defense with role-player supporting cast over "The ‘Melo Show" any day. ‘Melo would have better stats, but Lin and Co. would have more wins. Isn’t that what really matters anyway?

I agree with you youth.  I have never been a Melo fan and watching Melo play, he is the ultimate ball-stopper.  Hold onto the ball on the wing for 5-6 seconds while everybody stands around and watchesand then clank a contested 15 foot jumper.  He is not a winner and I don’t think he ever will be.

Well, to be fair… Let’s look at the teams he’s faced:

    2003-2004 – Lost to Kevin Garnett’s Wolves

    2004-2005 – Lost to Tim Ducan’s Spurs

2005-2006 – Lost to the Clippers (The year the Clippers were actually good)

2006-2007 – Lost to Tim Duncan’s Spurs again

    2007-2008 – Lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers

2008-2009 – Lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers again

2009-2010 – Lost to Deron Williams’ Jazz

2010-2011 – Lost to the Celtics and Knicks were without Amare Stoudemire

Well, if they are in the play-offs, they will be facing good teams.  They fact that they faced some truly elite teams came because they were were often not super highly seeded.  Sure, winning in the play-offs is difficult, but Melo isn’t a player who can carry a team into contention.  He needs to be surrounded by the right kind of talent.

Other than the Clippers and Jazz, you really can’t say Melo should’ve won any of those playoff series’.

And let’s also take a look at the fact that EVERY team he’s been on since his rookie season, has been to the playoffs. LeBron can’t say that. Dwayne Wade can’t say that.

If he hadn’t come in and revived this team then they wouldn’t have made the playoffs, hence his playoff record would be salvaged.

quick question. do you guys think Melo can win more with teamates of Kirk Hinrich, Tony Allen, Luc Mbah Moute and Tyson Chandler more so than his current teamates? the reason im asking because i was wondering that if Melo was placed into the same situation Iverson was in when he made the finals, would he find equal success, more or less? is surrounding him with top defensive minded players in every position who have some, although limitted, offensive capabilities. is that the best way to build around melo?

its not that i dont think melo can defend, i just dont see being in a team that tries to outscore other teams and win. they tried that already by pairing him with Iverson and where did it get them? they then surrounded him with good defenders and made the conference finals. i still feel melo can compete and win, but the guy needs the team to be in the right system with the right coach who can grind out enough guys to let them win with his talent in the end. thats what larry brown did with the Answer.

In 2008-2009, Melo led Denver past Chris Paul’s Hornets and Dirk Nowitzki’s Mavericks. That Nuggets team was really good, just couldn’t beat the Lakers, who obviously won the championship.

Another thing people aren’t considering is just how deep the Western Conference was during these times. You could win 50 games and be the 8th seed.

    IB

He came into a team that already had pretty good players to begin with.  Let’s not act like he single-handedly led his team to the playoffs.  His rookie season, he was already playing with Andre Miller, Nene, and Marcus Camby.  Miller and Camby in their prime.

LeBron came into the league with Ilgauskas, Ricky Davis and Boozer that left the next season and was replaced with Drew Gooden.

There’s a huge difference in talent there.

Oh and by the way, Dwyane Wade has made the playoffs every year, except one season, the year he was injured.

If the Nuggets were able to inbound the ball they would have beaten one of those Kobe teams.

I agree that Melo has played when the western conference was super deep. Melo’s teams were always average. The one time he had a chance at a championship george karl couldn’t coach them and they lost. He has always been on average teams. Play off record is overrated it is a team game.

Look at who they lost from IB

    2003-2004 – Lost to Kevin Garnett’s Wolves

    2004-2005 – Lost to Tim Ducan’s Spurs

2005-2006 – Lost to the Clippers (The year the Clippers were actually good)

2006-2007 – Lost to Tim Duncan’s Spurs again

    2007-2008 – Lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers

2008-2009 – Lost to Kobe Bryant’s Lakers again

2009-2010 – Lost to Deron Williams’ Jazz

2010-2011 – Lost to the Celtics and Knicks were without Amare Stoudemire

    those are all good teams.

Whoa… I never wrote Anthony did it single handedly, BUT he led those teams. He was the best player on those teams.

People forget how good he was in 2008-2009 when the Nuggets wrapped up Chris Paul’s Hornets (the real deal MVP version of Chris Paul before the knee injury) in five games and then wrapped up Dirk and the Mavs in five games too. Melo made huge clutch shots that series. And they gave the Lakers a tough series.

And I’m not saying Melo is better than LeBron. They’re honestly two different players. The point was that Melo has been to the playoffs every single season of his career, so how can he be called a non-winner??? This is a man who also led Syracuse to a national championship as a freshman.

Wow this the most fair weather people I’ve ever seen all March it was trade Melo let it be Lin team then in April he averages 30 carries the Knicks to the playoffs with a new coach no amare and all 3pt shooters and it gets quiet now it’s Melo is selfish he sucks not a winner blah blah. Appreciate a players greatness before you magnify his negatives. Playoffs every year ran into some very good teams lost but nobody remembers when he was one inbound pass away from the finals?

I was surprised his play off record was one of the worse as they did get to the Conference Finals in 2008/09. T-Mac has never won a play off series and he had Yao on his team for some of them so surely his record is the worse.

Mello has never been on a losing season in his NBA career as far as I can see ( he may have played on more losing games than winning games for the Knicks in one of the last two years) but the team he finished the season on has always been above .500.

The Knicks were always going to have a big ask against Miami and really needed to be in the top 5 seeds to have a shot at progressing I thought.

This season they did disappoint me a bit in the regular season although they had their highest winning percentage for 11 years but with a full pre season this summer, the return of Lin and maybe another veteran FA or two, I can see the Knicks going forward still. They may not be genuine contenders but they should be relavent and hopefully win a play off series or two along the way.

Personally I wonder if a team like the Knicks which makes a lot of money almost perhaps lacks the drive in the need for success which other teams may have knowing that a play off run could mean an extra signing or a larger extension etc. The Knicks MSG for every game, make a load on the hospitality side, sell loads of merchandise and so getting a couple of sell out play off games suits their needs perhaps.

Melo had some huge games down the run and it was almost like he took over the team and said "we are going to the play offs".

When comparing him and Lebron’s playoff wins, I think you have to include the west is much deeper and tougher than the east (in the past it was). With that said, while Melo might be a better scorer, he still doesn’t have the impact in every are like LBJ.

Also Melo came to the East at the wrong time.  East used to be weak also, they would have done better facing Indy or Bulls.

How can people say he’s not on Durants level, what has Durant done, dont say win scoring titles because McGrady won them too

LeBron got MVP’s and no rings so he’s not on Kobe’s level

I always said Melo knows what it takes to be a winner but he has yet to understand what it takes to be a champion

And I’m his biggest fan in the world

He needs another star with him. Pau Gasol went 0-12 in the playoffs with Memphis.
Chris Paul and Deron Williams don’t have that many playoff series victories either.
It pretty much takes two stars to get it done.

And is it just me or is Carmelo never fairly rated? We are either overrating him or underrating him.

The moment I realized this was when the Jazz played Melo’s Nuggets in the playoffs.  During that series I feared Melo would equal TMac from the Jazz-Rockets series’ the previous years.  With the superior supporting cast on the Nuggets, I thought that would be too much for my Jazz.  Fortunately, Melo was not TMac.  Instead, the Jazz were able to control Melo and force him into bad shot after bad shot guarding him almost exclusively 1v1 w/a rookie  (Wes Matthews).  On the other end of the floor, Melo defended no one.

TMac shredded us 1v1 no matter who we put on him.  And he was actually decent on D too.  If not for his unproductive supporting cast (including Yao Ming’s 8 to’s per game), the Rockets would have gone places those years.  Melo was a different story.

Melo entered the NBA with all world talent, but he doesn’t work like dominating players do.  He still has a soft body after 9 years as a pro.
