Yandyhere2ParticipantGet that big and still is super athletic? I call bullshit to alot of guys who are scared to gain weight cause they claim it will mess with their athleticism. In most cases when you lift and gain it the right way, you get even more athletic.

TyroberParticipantI don’t think I have ever heard anyone say that don’t want to work out because it will hurt their athleticism. Obviously if your going to try and be a body builder or something then its different, but I really can’t agree with what your saying.

Jeff Teague was quoted saying he didn’t want to go over 175-180 pounds because he thought he’d lose some of his athleticism.
I didn’t say scared to workout, I said gaining weight and getting stronger.

TyroberParticipantWell obviously Jennings, Teague, and other small point guards wouldn’t gain an advantge by gaining weight when their biggest strength is quickness. They obviously work out, but getting stronger and gaining weight is two different things

That’s actually the reason me and my teammates didn’t lift when we were in H.S. Of course it’s not true but we thought it was

boshjonesfordParticipantNaww every player has a differet body type and structure, the one that works for them. I cant imagine a bulked up Allen Iverson or Tony Parker and they are still considered to be really good players. You are what you are and getting big is one meathod is difenitaly not nessecary to be good. Just my Opinion

surveParticipantits his individual makeup. his body is different from the other guys you mentioned. some guys high metabolism, others dont. some guys can put on poundage and still be lean…while others it may not translate into muscle. some guys like Chris Douglas Roberts will probably never get any bigger than what they are.
Bledsoe is naturally built like that and adding more pounds doesnt hurt him. Jeff Teague has added more muscle since his days at Wake….but Marquis is already pretty packed. I think Marquis had been working out a lot though and is not naturally as built as Bledsoe.
Bledsoe eerily reminds me of another Kentucky guard who was almost identical in height/weight/structure, length, and athleticism.

Yandyhere2ParticipantAll a guy has to do is eat and lift and you will get bigger, if you eat more calories than you burn you will bulk up, it’s a bunch of excuses people make, now I will agree some guys do have different body types, and that may be the reason why if some guys bulk up they will lose athleticism and some guys it wouldn’t hurt.
You think Bledsoe is naturally big like that?

surveParticipanthe has definitely worked on his body before and after he got into the league, but what I am saying is, he already had that natural cut and muscularity. you can be musclar and bulky as a youth, but you just dont get that kind of cut unless your body is already pre-defined like that. He was probably cut like that since he was a pre-teen, all he had to do was grow and add weight.

DipoTimeParticipant60 pounds? Idk bout that.. He was listed like 6’7 225 in high school and now he is listed at 6’8 250.. Why do people think he is so huge? I’ve heard people say he was 270-280.. But ESPN and the heat roster on nba.com both have him at 250.
Surve I think you nailed it with Bledsoe though. Not only how he has always been cut but that Delk comparison is dead on, at least their physical attributes anyway.

Regardless, he’s put on atleast 40-50lbs since he’s come into the league, that’s moreso the point I was trying to make.

surveParticipantyes, it was natural for him to keep his athleticism because I guarantee you he has a low body fat percentage and he is all fast twitch. Tony Delk was listed at 6’1" and most of the time his playing weight was around 185-190lbs. Bledsoe is listed as 6’1" and 195lbs. Virtually the same. They are not heavy for their height because they have low body fat, pure fast twitch muscle development, and likely very strong, heavy bones. For this reason, you are less likely to see these guys with any breaks or fractures. As far as injuries, what you are more likely to see is sprains and injuries to ligaments and tendons for guys like that…holding that bone and all that muscle together.

surveParticipantteenagers are not this defined unless they were already that growing up, now all they have to do is bulk up and add poundage. do you know how long it takes a person to get this type of definition? some may never get it no matter what they do. others can keep this physique well beyond their 50’s

surveParticipantIts more than just the frame though, you have to have that muscular makeup and metabolism that just burns fat away. I work out and I have a friend who works out with me. He is just like Bledsoe and no matter what he eats, he cant gain anymore than 5-10lbs, but he is hella cut. He would drink like 3 creatine shakes per day and his calorie intake was ridiculous….still, he keeps the same cut/vascular physique.
Me on the other hand, have never been skinny. I have always been a bigger boned, solid, and sturdy framed kid. I never had that type of definition. I did improve it but still not to that level.
Guys like Melo and Lamar Odom have "softer" bodies than a lot of NBA players, but they still have basketball player type bodies and there are guys that would kill to have their bodies. However, Dwight Howard, Bledsoe, and lets throw in an older guy like Ben Gordon….and an even older guy like Derek Fisher, they have that structure, vascularity, and metabolism.

But like you said it probably was just natural for him, and good call on the fast twitch muscle theory, that’s probably the reason he won’t slow down even if he does gain more weight, he’s just naturally fast and always will be no matter how much weight he puts on.

every body is different…. as for lebron…. i remember indiana basketball b4 the season found an article saying that the heat weighed lebron and he weighed 265 and wade was 231….. which seems reasonable…

Bledsoe is the biggest lookin PG in the L, and he’s right up there in the top 5 in athleticism for PG’s.
Gary Payton even said Bledsoe has Westbrook athleticism, I agree he does, he may not be able to dunk everything and finish over the rim as consistent as Westbrook, because of his height(No taller than 6’0) but I do think he’s just as every bit the athlete.

And speaking of the Teague brother’s how is it that Marquis is 190 pounds and Jeff is about 180, but Jeff doesn’t like to go over 180 because he feels it will hinder him some, but Marquis looks to play fine at 190? They have the same exact genetics, so their body types have to be very similar.

surveParticipantin regards to Bledsoe being bigger than Delk…. for lack of better terms…and not to imply anything but Bledsoe is Delk on "steroids". he is a bigger, stronger, more athletic version of Delk….but Delk was big, strong and athletic as well to be the same height.
You cant say Jeff and Marquis have the EXACT same genetics. The facially resemble each other but Jeff is naturally skinnier. You have to realize that your agility and coordination goes along with your body makeup as well, so for Jeff to go over a certain weight could hinder what his body is best at. Its not always noticable by eye. Marquis has crafted his game around his body and Jeff has done the same.
In some physical makeups, some can carry weight better than others. This is no more evident than in boxing….where you are relegated to a specific weight class. You can have 2 guys that are 6’1" and both are middleweights, but one guy can carry his weight in his shoulders and upper body, another can carry it in his legs and lower body. IF they were boxers, and they fought at a catchweight, of 185lbs, then Marquis would likely be the stronger fighter. In boxing 2-3 lbs is a LOT. So you are underestimating the impact that 5-10lbs has on some of the guys we are speaking about here.

JNixonParticipantBledsoe has always been ripped up like that. Jeff Teague also has gotten alot more muscular than when he was in college. It does depend on body frame, I agree. Some players have wide shoulders and can put on weight and muscle easier than other guys. Kevin Durant has narrow shoulders but he’s definitely gotten stronger and bigger since he was drafted, he just did so within his body composition and put on about 10-15 lbs as to not gain so much muscle and weight that he gets stiff. Bledsoe really hasnt put on that much muscle since he was in college in all honesty. Maybe some, because of the NBA strength and conditioning, but pro trainers are paid to buIld guys up so they can withstand the physicality of the NBA, but not at the expense of flexibility and effectiveness.

TallmanNYCParticipantI read an article about wade and lebrons summer workouts. The trainer said that lebron was 265. That is a huge amount of weight to be able to get 40+ inches off the floor.
Upperbody weight will probably make you a little slower since it is your legs that do most of the work when you jump and run. Upper weight also raises your center of gravity which isn’t really a good thing. The added strength helps in some areas so it generally helps which is why all Serious basketball players at any level lift weights. But I could see some guards just deciding that they don’t need extra upperbody muscle.

And yea as I stated earlier in the thread I seen some pics of Bledsoe in HS and he was big then, matter of fact I think he’s only gotten a little bigger since HS, I know dudes were probably terrified of him in HS lol on the court at least, most guards in HS unless you are elite are around 160-165 maybe even smaller, Bledsoe was already 185-190!
And Jeff Teague has gotten more defined and bigger since Wake, but I don’t think he was ever little, he just always wore undershirts at Wake, you could tell by his forearms and shoulders under that shirt that he wasn’t that small.
It’s just amazing to me how big Bledsoe is and the things he can do with all that weight, but he does have very broad shoulders and that could be a reason he can hold so much weight and muscle and it doesn’t slow him down.
