Arc12345ParticipantI mean honestly, the guy was the best player in the league for at least a 4-5 year stretch. How he has 1 MVP shows in my opinion how much politics goes into the award. Whether people choose to admit it or not, the scandal really hurt his favorability and I think that hurt his MVP voting results. There’s just no way he should have only 1. No way.
So how many should he have? 2? 3? 4? More? I don’t want to hear, "The voting was the voting and Kobe only has 1," garbage. I honestly wish there could’ve been player voted awards back then, because I’m pretty sure he’d have 5-6 MVP’s. I really appreciate the player given awards despite people getting upset about them. Because in this case if Kobe kept getting voted MVP’s by the players, clearly we’d see a discrepancy and the bias in the voting.

dcaseParticipantKobe has been my favorite player in the league for that past ~15 years or so. I agree he should have more than 1 MVP to his name and the whole Colorado thing hurt his image and could have possibly impacted his chances of being MVP in the years that followed. With that being said there are other players that were not involved in a scandal who are deserving of more MVPs than they were actually awarded. The one that comes to mind that played in the same time frame as Kobe would be Shaq. Please tell me how he only has one MVP award?

Scrooge McBucketsParticipantThe players awards are bogus! James Harden received it over Steph Curry last year! Easily Steph is the better individual talent, had the better season and better team!
… Besides you can make a legit argument that the year Kobe won the award he did not deserve it. Chris Paul was the rightful winner of the award that year… I actually thought Kobe received it more because of his career acheivements and the fact he hadnt won one yet.

lalailaParticipant2005-2006
averaging 35.6 i think points per game 45wins or something, good enough to get 3-1 lead in the playoffs against great suns team..
I think MVP’s are too concertraded on team sucess because teams success might come with valuability of everyone as a team, and one player who a more valuable as a player to his than anyone else in the league should get his taking into account team success PLUS team strength..I mean even that 7th seed seemed high enough with Lamar being only other legit strong starter.
If Kareem got one MVP even without making playoffs Kobe could have too. ESPECIALLY when there were no strong MVP candidate. (If I am correct with all the respect to Steve Nash he wasn’t THAT dominan to take MVP back to back plus neither was Suns comparing with lets say Curry’s 67wins last year when you just have to give it to him)

losnopesosParticipantRemember when Derrick Rose got an MVP when it was beyond obvious that it belonged to Lebron? Something people are going to point to Kobe and Rose both having one MVP and compare them evenly…smh…

trelos6Participant2010-11 Derrick Rose v Lebron James
Points: 25.0 vs 26.7
Rebounds: 4.1 vs 7.5
Assists: 7.7 vs 7.0
Steals: 1.0 vs 1.6
Blocks: 0.6 vs 0.6
TO: 3.4 vs 3.6
eFG%: .485 vs .541
FT%: .858 vs .759
WS: 13.1 vs 15.6
PER: 23.5 vs 27.3
VORP: 6.0 vs 8.2
Team Wins: 62 vs 58
It’s safe to say, Lebron deserved it more, but since he had just joined the Healtes, Wade took away some of his votes.

HitsterParticipantKobe deserved to win more than one MVP award especially for the 35.6ppg season in 2005/06. But don’t forget that Shaq and KG only won one MVP each so Kobe is in good company.

ScarTissue98ParticipantKevin Johnson, Jason Kidd, John Stockton all had better #’s than Nash….. & to give you even further evidence Tiny Archibald Averaged 34.1 points & 11.5 assists one year & did not win League MVP….
Shaq should have won in 2005 & Kobe in 2006…. And a great case can be made that Kobe deserved a third MVP during one of the 3 years he took the Lakers to 3 straight Finals…..

PulseGlazerParticipantKobe deserved about 2 MVPs, but neither is the one he won. That was CPs year.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantYa’all really need to put the kobe Kool-aid down.
Everybody is excited. Because of the retirement announcement and the crush of propaganda. But you will get a backlash.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI can’t really say Kobe deserves more than 2 MVPs at the most. 2005-06 he should have won going away but there is an unspoken rule in the NBA that you can’t win mvp unless you play for a legitimate title contender and the Lakers team around Kobe that season was just awful. In my opinion that only makes his performance that much more impressive though.
The year he did win (2007-2008) was a toss-up with Chris Paul and I think could have went either way. It’s hard to think of another season where he should have won. He put up great numbers (30 ppg 7 rpg 6 apg) in 2003 but the Lakers underachieved that year and honestly I can’t say he was better than mcgrady (who I thought should have won) In 2007 he led the league in scoring but I can’t really say he deserved mvp over Dirk. 2009 and 10 he won championships but the mvp is a regular season award and lebron was leading much less talented cavs teams to more the best record in the league.

MopgrassParticipantI think we, as a society, are so into underdogs that we forget to give credit to the best guy on the floor sometimes.

HitsterParticipantTo be a legit MVP contender a player has to be the best player on one of the 5 or so most successful NBA teams that season given how a lot of the panel vote. I know there is always the issue of stats padding if they vote for someone on a less successful team or even voting for a player who has helped a team improve hugely can mean other contenders are overlooked.
Also there can sometimes be an issue where a top player has not won the award and the voters perhaps almost feel they should vote for them as their years of being an MVP contender may be dying out.
I’m a Phoenix fan and fully feel Nash deserved to win in 2004/05 but when he won the next year I was thinking Nash double MVP yet AI, KG, Shaq have only won one each, Kobe, Dirk, LBJ had then yet to win it etc.
Steph Curry was a deserved MVP last year and if his form stays anything like it is should walk it this year but then he is a double MVP and ahead of a lot of legendary players.
Kobe IMO deserved to win in 2005/06 and I cannot argue with his 2007/08 win either. Interestingly neither of these years were one of his 5 title years, so can we perhaps say. The real thing that matters could actually be the Finals MVP as if you win that you are almost 99% certain to be an NBA Champion.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantKobe should not have won the year he did,
Lebron or CP3 were better choices, but both played for small market teams
