Since so many people here keep asking how to pronounce his name……….

This is the proper pronunciation of the name Giannis Antetokounmpo —>

    Yawnnis Ahdaytowkunbo

It is also correct to call him Gianni (depending on the perspective), which would then be pronounced like this —>

    Yawnnie Ahdaytowkunbo

Finally cleared that up, seems like every article has a different name for him. To me that names is an effin nightmare, I’m just going to call him Gregory

Giannis translated to English is John so that would be more appropriate than Greg

There is nothing confusing or hard to understand.

Talk about him and you pronounce it as Yawnnis. Talk directly to him and call him as Yawnnie. It’s really not complicated.

      http://www.behindthename.com/name/yanni

      Notice the name “Yanni”

      http://www.behindthename.com/name/yiannis

      Notice the name “Yiannis”

And understand that the capital “G” is just another letter substituted for capital “Y” (= Greek letter “Γ”)

Here you can hear Joey Dorsey call his friend “Yanni”

He calls him “Yanni” because when he talks to him, he calls him that.

Here is a website that pronounces the name for Greek basketball player Ioannis Bourousis. “Ioannis” is just the proper form of the name.

      http://www.gigabasket.org/index.php?league=Euroleague&season=2012&player=Bourousis,%20Ioannis

Click on the sound player. You will hear it pronounced. And it is phonetically in US English “Yawnnis”.

There really is nothing hard to grasp, and it’s actually quite an easy and simple name. As was already pointed it out here, it’s basically like John/Johnnie.

So his last name was Adetokunbo… then he becomes a greek citizen and the spelling changes, but the pronuntiation is maintained. Got it…

What is the purpose of adding all those extra letters to his last name? To make it look more Greek?
Adetokunbo is much easier to read and phonetically, how that reads is how it’s pronounced.

It is a West African name and I will spell it how it’s originally spelled.

First of all, it’s not pronounced Adetokunbo phonetically. It’s pronounced Ahdaytowkunbo.

Secondly, because he was born in Greece. He was born in Greece, so of course his name is written in Greek on his birth certificate and his passport.

Newsflash genius, Greek language does NOT use the Latin alphabet. Stop being a freaking moron. They didn’t add letters, they just translated it.

For example letters nt in Greek alphabet = the letter d in Latin alphabet. Letters mp in Greek alphabet = the letter b in Latin alphabet.

Believe it or not, not every language in the world uses Latin alphabet.

And the point of this post is???? I actually haven’t heard too many people wonder how to pronounce it. No matter how many times you tell us, it still going to be massacred by Stern on draft day, as well as every announcer after that. I am excited to see his name on a jersey. Its not going to fit, what are they going to do then? Abbreviate it? Put his first name on the back?
Again, does it really matter, no one’s ever going to pronounce it right. So what’s the point? Just deal with the mispronunciation.
