Im a sixers fan and i hate to sound pessimistic but he couldnt get on the floor for two seasons and its still not 100% that he will be back this season. Not to mention he dealt with injuries on and off in college. Realistically him having a long productive career just seems like a pipe dream at this point.

I thought he could be a top center in the league with the right development. There were players on the board that wouldnt have interrupted the tank job but would have upside and two years under their belt. Embiid is definitely a bust at this point :/

I dont think hes a bust. In fact I think he will be very good…just in limited minutes.

I doubt he will ever be more than a 24mpg game guy and his training loads will probably be light his whole career.

That being said, I doubt he will reach his full potential which is a shame because he was looking like a beast. Ive carried foot injuries my whole life…they linger and take forever to heal.

In the meantime, the guy should lay off the protein shakes. Hes never going to have a strength problem in the NBA so he should take 10lbs of pressure off his lower limbs in the interests of longevity.

If you think a top 3 pick in the NBA will only be a 24 minute guy, doesn’t that mean you think he’ll be a bust?

I think Joel will be fine. Dude is still young and is like 7’2" now. You know he’s special when the 76ers would rather trade okafor than him even though he hasn’t played a minute

Lets not be too liberal in use of the term "bust".

24 minutes a game at a high level is plenty valuable. Anthony Bennet, Dark Milicic are busts.

drafting an injured player is always risky, but Embiid’s upside was just too good to pass up. It’s still too early to tell. in a few years he may end up an all star or be out of the league, time will tell.. But I would never consider a player a “bust” if it’s due to injury.

a Bust would be someone like Anthony Bennett or Darko.

Not many big men are able to recover from the sort of injury Joel Embiid has. Yao Ming retired early because of a similar injury. Zydrunas Ilgauskas was one of the only big men I’ve seen who recovered from a significant foot injury and like Embiid he missed massive amounts of time before he was able to play. Big Z was fortunate not to miss much time for the remainder of his career. I don’t really remember Ilgauskas prior to the injury so it’s hard to say how much mobility he retained.

I hope for the 76ers and Embiid’s case he can fully recover and reach his full potential, but historically speaking the odds are against him.

I’ve been present for some light workouts for Embiid. They happen after warmups on game day. He doesn’t move as though he’s a guy who is limited, though he was only going half speed(he didn’t get more clearance until after the year). The only thing noticeable was him kicking his foot out in a fade away type of shot from his outside jumpers- because he wasn’t allowed to land on it.

But watching him move and watching his shot is easy to see a potential superstar if he’s healthy enough to play 70 games a year

Can’t call him a bust until he actually plays….a bust is a player who was super hyped but couldn’t play, whereas you wouldn’t call derrick rose a bust you would say he had a bad injury history and couldn’t play to his fullest potential.

He was tearing Nerlens Noel apart this time Last year at the Sixers practice facility in 5 on 5’s………

The Sixers brass spent All summer trying to talk Embiid into the 2nd surgery as a Pre-caution……..

And ONLY after meeting w/ Kevin Durant & his Foot Surgeon did Embiid, who was running & jumping all over in Vegas during the Summer League, agree to the Surgery…….

Part of me believes Hinkie instantly realized they could tank another year & would have an outside shot to Land Ben Simmons……….. which they have now done…………

In an interview w/ Durant’s surgeon who widened & thicked KD’s foot bone w/ a Non FDA approved synthetic DNA material……… the surgeon claimed Embiid’s foot bone was in FAR better shape than KD’s………….. so much so that they used bone from Embiid’s own Hip instead of the synthetic material used for KD………

The surgeon went on to say that he expected a "full recovery & a Long career" from Embbiid…… Embiid is a Full 7’2” – he can shoot like Porzingus; he’s got Okafor touch around the Rim & Rudy Gobert’s defensive ability……… I’d be cautious w/ that kind of Talent too…..

The Sixers & their fans have Nothing to lose……. I think the kid is going to be fine….. They’ll probably ease him into the starting line up this 1st year………. but Ben Simmons & Joel Embiid could terrorize the NBA for a Decade……….. w/ that much Possible upside……. it would pay to be Patient

I think people should stop the wild comparisons. I mean, Embiid is a fantastic talent for sure, but saying he can shoot like Porzingis, play inside like Okafor and defend like Gobert is silly. The guy has never played an NBA game, and he’s already projected as the GOAT…

I’ve seen Embiid shoot in person. He has the stroke and the touch to shoot in the same category as Porzingis. If I could attach a video of his shot I would because I have some on my phone that I took. I won’t say he’s as good as Porzingis or better or worse since we’re talking practice with no one guarding him- but I will say the potential is absolutely there for it. But until he does it in a game all we can look at is the potential. I don’t think he was nearly as good coming out of KU, but I believe his work on his shooting is why he could be in that territory as a big man with a good outside shot.

That said I don’t think he spends nearly as much time as Porzingis outside. I think he’s going to be a guy that stays from within the foul line and in mostly, but will take 1-2 shots from beyond the arc per game because he’s going to be the type that needs to be defended everywhere from the three point line in. I don’t think he’s going to be a stretch big at all which is why I avoided calling him that.

Remember how everyone thought Oden would be a star even after he continually got hurt?  Injuries like those that Embiid had are hard to overcome. Sixers should plan like he will not play- it would be stupid to trade Noel and Okafor when Saric and Embiid both have not played an NBA game.

Its not entirely impossible to overcome an injury and become a more than productive player. Similarly with Blake Griffin’s knee injury. He sat out his first year, then when he finally played, people didnt expect him to even put u the numbers he did. Then in other situations you have players like Greg Oden, who never played up to his hype – likely due to the injuries. The fact of the matter is its unique to every individual. How well they heal. We’ll have to wait and see for Embiid. Wouldn’t brake the bank and build around him just yet. Me personally – I think he’ll be a fine talent.

only a bust in the sense that they wasted the pick. the talent was proven at KU

either way he will never likely be worthy of that draft spot…accept it.

Either way? If he fairs out from that injury, there is no one that is selected after him that you would want instead of him. Still a good pick at 3.

noone that doesn’t play maybe …

hell Jokic went 41st and he is turning into a stud.

draft scouts are not that good anymore,or their decision maker is persuaded by hype for most teams.

Not too mention they passed on zack lavine.

They could have traded down a few spots and taken lavine or just taken smart or exum  at 3.at the time it might have seemed weak, but it would have gotten them a lot better production than they have had from anyone that is’nt playing be it embiid or saric etc.

exum would’nt have likely been the right move either in retrospect, but still.

they made the right pick with little else available that had elite upside, but this is why you don’t trust the prospect when they say they will be fine.

The truth is they don’t know at all,or they know damn well and just hoping to get paid.

too bad they did’nt have crystal ball , maybe they would have taken saric at 3 and Capela at 12, they would’nt have won any more games, but his time on the court might have molded him into a solid big they could count on going forward.

The sixers were very cautious with him for two years knowing there was no rush for him to compete. He has gotten so much attention medically the past two years it would be a shame if he cant stay healthy after he returns. If he returns and keeps getting reinjured then yes he is a bust. Because one of the best abilities for a pro athlete is availability.  If he plays and stays healthy for a while, most people will overlook the two years he sat. Just a bit hard to label a guy a bust when he was drafted knowing he would miss his rookie year. Its not like he was Anthony Bennet and has been healthy and taken first overall and just couldnt compete at the NBA level. I am rooting for the guy.

In my view a “bust” is a guy who was drafted too high and doesn’t translate into a very good NBA player or even a player who has the talent but does stupid things on and off court which affects his career.

Until we see Embiid in action we honestly cannot judge him. I’d call him seriously injury prone at this moment and he is the sort of player who everytime he goes down you would hold your breath.

Foot injuries in any sport are a big worry especially in one such as basketball given the stress guys put on their feet before you even factor in the extra issues with someone of Embiid’s size.

This 24mpg has probably been used in passing as that was the idea Houston had with Yao just before he broke down for the final time.

I’d fully expect Embiid’s minutes to be managed carefully and his initial workload. The 76ers will likely look at this in pre-season to see how he recovers after games and what stresses it is putting on his body. After playing minimally for what will have been 2.5 years, I doubt Embiid will play night in night out. I’d be amazed if he didn’t sit a few games along the way and his minutes be gradually built up as Brett Brown sorts out his line ups and rotations.
