Whenever NBA 2K comes out (my preferred NBA video game), I always find myself having a hard time choosing a team to start a franchise with. I keep in mind EVERYTHING possible. This includes

-Making sure the team has a good salary cap situation and able to at least get a MLE Free Agent
-Having young players with very high potential to develop. Doesn’t matter is they have a low rating or high rating I just want players with good potential. Having a player with good potential and developing every month, I LOVE doing that, its just so cool how you can take a 70 prospect and turn him into a star. Potential is a BIG factor for me.
-I usually prefer a team that is not established/dominant (ex. Lakers, etc.), BUT I also want to choose a team where if I win the championship it wouldn’t be so far fetched (Like imagine if the Knicks won the 2011 NBA Championship)
-Having good trade pieces is a must in case I want to make a trade (like young players with good potential or older players with higher ratings but are on the decline)
    – A PLUS is if there is a player with an expiring contract.
    – REBDOUNDING.. I HATE when my team in 2K doesn’t rebound. I NEED a big man who can rebound, otherwise I just get super pissed lol.
    – AT LEAST 2 3 pt shooters.. I hate when all I do is score on layups and dunks. And its hard to makes shots with players who don’t really have high enough ratings to do it consistently. When I play i put ALL my sliders up, even defense, which makes shooting and getting open shots even harder. So I want at least 2 good shooters to give me a chance so I don;t have to depend on just dunking all the time.

Keeping that in mind, I’m wondering what everyone else thinks. This isn’t a serious post, just a fun one, as I can’t wait for NBA 2K11 to come out. With 2k10, I had many different franchises and according to what I was looking for this is what I came up with.

    My TOP 3

Grizzlies- With Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo, they can be the video game version of MJ and Pippen. They have alot of shooters which always makes the game more interesting as opposed to just scoring in the paint all the time. They have 2 players with 90 plus potential which is a MUST for me. They have 3 first round picks for is great because this adds to a young nucleus that I can develop. They have 2 rebounding machines in Gasol and Randolph. On defense they have who I like to call Hasheem ThaCHEAT. He is such a beast on defense! Anyone who plays 2K knows this. He can average 10 blocks a game EASY. Its so annoying playing against Thabeet say if your playing against your friend because he will almost ALWAYS block your shot. Anyways, this taem is probably my team of choice because although Thabeet makes things easier, you don’t have an even begger cheat like Westbrook just running in an DUNKING ALL THE TIME. You have Conley, a shooter, and a small one at that so it does makes things more difficult.

BULLS!- Derrick Rose in this game is a BEAST! The easiest player to play with in this game no doubt (Ok, one of the easiest). All you have to do is power up and run in for a dunk. They have alot of really great peices (Rose’s potential is off that charts) Deng’s is like mid 80’s, and Noah’s is low 80’s. Their rookies aren’t all that impressive but they do have a md 1st round pick and hopefully he will have good potential. Their shooting is a concern for me, as Hinrch and Deng are good shooters but nothing special. If they get LeBron, this team will be hard for me to pass up, as much as a cheat and luxury it is to have Derrick Rose. If they get LeBron, it’ll also be TOO EASY (ala Thunder: see below) but the Rose/James combo is as good as it gets! Minor problems is that if you go far into the franchise you will likely face salary problems as Deng and James have monster contracts (and you know Noah and Rose will be no different) You’re probably going to have to trade one of the 4 to make things work (I would trade Deng) Now all I would need is a couple of shooters, but like I said, again.. too easy, esp if they get James.

Thunder- they have everything, EXCEPT a big man, but with so much cap room they can afford a servicable big man and they also have TWO late first rounders. Plus, they have 2 players with superstar potential in Durant and Westbrook. Green and Harden also have very good potential but their rating potential will definately not be higher that the previous two I just mentioned. The have argurably the best young nucleous in the NBA. They are almost too easy to play with though, a scoring machine like Durant and with Westbrook all you gotta do in go in for a dunk. I havent started a franchise, and I wont in 2K11, for the fact its just going to be too easy, but they are the number 1 choice in terms of what I feel I want in a franchise. One problem is their lack of a big man, but again, with 2 first round picks and ALOT of cap room this won’t be too hard to fix. In conclusion, would I pick them.. No.. TOO EASY,

Other teams I like (not in any order except GS is probably up there for me lol)

Kings- good nucleous with Evans as their future superstar. Not enough shooters for me, though. And they are pretty slow as a team besides Evans.
Warriors- as much as I love the Warriors. I have to admit, they will NEVER be in contention for a tittle (anytime tiem anyways) They do have everything I look for in a 2K franchise, though. TWO players (wing players at that) with that 90 plus potential. Then you have shooters like Morrow who can shoot the lights out. You have TOP rebounders ( who are also very athletic for their size) in Biedrins and Randolph (randolph also have very high rating for potential (85 plus last time I checked) As much as I love this team, because they do have everything I want, I just don’t see them being a power house in the West mostly because they don’t play D. AND they have a lottery pick?! And an early secound rounder, this is a sick team, but like I said, I don’t want a team that if I win a championship it’ll be pretty unrealistic.
Bucks- good combo of everything (Jennings, Bogut and some nice draft picks) BUT this team isn’t deep enough for me.
T-Wolves- never was a fan of the T-wolves so no thanks. Do have A LOT of really awesoe pieces, I gotta admit.
Nets- awesome nucleus, and the 3rd pick in the draft. A lot of cap room to sign a big time free agent. But me being from NY, I don’t care if they even sign Lebron, I will NEVER be the Nets, sorry. I like Lopez, though. T-Will is a beast, also, not enough shooters for me.
Knicks- Ok, I am from NY. But they just don’t have enough players with potential for me. (Sorry to all my fellow Ney Yorkers, don’t take it personal ILNY! lol) Besides Gallo that is. Chandlers potential in this game is pretty low. Also, I don’t like their PG situation. And WTF to trading Jordan Hill??!? Anyways, as much as I love my Knicks, I probably wouldn’t pick them as my franchise.

I would other power teams like Nuggets, Lakers, etc. But like I said earilier, I’d rather start with a developing team. With all that said..

What team would you pick? What do you look for when starting a franchise in 2K? Again, this is just a fun thread, 2K isn’t much life (I am just REALLY bored at work) In conclusion, I CANT WAIT TILL OCT! 2K11 is gonna be sickkkk! lol

I thought I was one of the few that went through this but I’ve always had a hard time picking a team.

In 2k9 I stuck it out with Miami (made some trades – brought it Mayo at the 1, Stat at the 5) because of Beasley (but note I also wanted to play with Mayo).

Usually Grizzlies are on my list (I am from Vancouver after all), but then Zach Randolph’s there and I can never get around to scoring with his jumper. Clippers are a nice pick and if the Bulls had a better 2-guard they’d be nice b/c Derrick Rose is a beast in the game.

A lot of it boils down to the draft/offseason but if a player I like gets drafted to a team I’d never play with (ie Derozan to Toronto), it kinds of sucks.

I mean…if LeBron goes to New York or Chicago, you know people are going to use that as their team.

My last project in the game was with New York and move the bad contracts out.

I tried to trade for LeBron but it was impossible.

why not try the sixers? they have one of the best defensive point gaurds, high potential, and really player young in jrue, they will have turner, other young players in young and speights to develop, they have iggy as a major trade piece as well as the young guns, expirings in dalembert, kapono and green which equals 20 million and they are strong on the boards with sammy and brand being 10 board a night guys their whole careers. new coach in colins who is a great mind that improves a team by 12 wins minimal in his first season. finaly a true 2 gaurd, so start line up of jrue, turner, iggy brand and dalembert is one of the strongest defensive teams in the league, they also have a perfect 6th man in lou wil who scores with ease, shooters in kapono and meeks. so i think thats all the things you looked for just a different perspective than the usual teams

My team to start a franchise is always a upstart team…NO BIG TEAMS…NO SIXERS….I like the Bucks right now…A great young Point guard…Good Defender for Cheap( Moute) And a good Center…Salmons and others are good but I traded Ilysova and Delfino to Washington for Mike Miller and Nick Young…Also traded for D.Lee at power forward….Ridnour/Salmons/Gadzuric and Pick for D.Lee,,..There on top of the League right now…They signed LBJ and Stat(LBJ Starts at point guard LBJ/Salmons/Gallo/Stat/Whiteside/ with the Bucks pick they drafted Udoh at Power Forward) and traded Wilson Chandler for Hassan Whiteside at 16…Also The Magic traded me Matt Barnes and J.Williams for Kurt Thomas…they Had Arenas for Carter and Gortat… My team is nice right now…A created a player at 50 rating…Signed him..sent him to the D.League and developed him to a 80…he’s a 6’7 all around Penny Type…He’s starting with Jennings/Miller/Lee/Bogut/Moute/Barnes/J.Will/N.Young…And i traded Redd for Tyson Chandler and Tyrus Thomas…We have a ton of cap in 1 year but I want to resign everyone and maybe find the Future Starter at Sf…Miller/Barnes and Moute are a crazy combo at the SF rotation but more like the bench guys…The Two Ty’s are instant energy guys off the bench…they also spell Lee and Bogut barring an Injury…

I always just start with my favorite team, the Jazz, and then I do a fantasy draft and pick the players I want. My cap situation is great and Im able to get most of the players I need to complete my team.
Right my team is as follows
Mike Conley, Dwayne Wade, Gerald Wallace, Kevin Love, Brooke Lopez
My starting lineup is very young but I love the scoring presences of Wade and Wallace, and then the scoring/passing point guard of Conley. Soon though, probably during the offseason I will try and get a more defensive presence down low by trading K Love for Nene or Kmart or maybe Speights. Lopez is a great defensive presence so the center is set.
My backups are Rafer Alston, Wes Matthews(I created him), Donte Greene, Brandan Wright, Nenad Krstic, JJ Hickson, and Francisco Garcia

I like using the Thunder, and trade for a good center..
It’s too easy anyway, I go 82-0 even with bench warmers as my whole team
    LOL

Eh.. Its probably because i play on the wii
In the wii, it’s just too easy
In my player, My players averaging 25ppg 5apg 7spg in 5 minutes a quarter
I guess it’s just easy for the wii
it’s probably harder on xbox or playstation
