I was watching some videos of Michael Beasley dominating in China and I began to think, excluding players who had their careers derailed by injuries, what would be the NBA All Time Team of Lazy/Wasted Talent players. Not talking about busts like Kwame Brown. I’m talking about players who had great potential but failed to put the effort in and subsequently had their careers end or suffer severly. Off-court problemed guys fit in this category too. Guys that come to mind are Beasley, Adrew Bynum, Eddy Curry.

    Thinking all-time team I’d start with…

    C – Andrew Bynum
    PF – Eddy Curry (I know he’s a C)

I’d throw Beasley and maybe Larry Sanders in there.

What does your team look like?

I feel like Tim Thomas should definitely be on here. Even though he still had an OK career he could’ve been so much better.

Jr rider was another guy who just threw his career away due to drugs and bad decisions.

Also hesitant to mention Anthony Bennett because he hasn’t even turned 23 yet, but with his added weight earlier on it kinda shows his lack of commitment especially after being drafted #1 overall.

Eddie Griffin (RIP) is also a player that comes to mind.

    First off, great topic.

Leaving guys mentioned already off my team (like Bynum, Curry, Thomas etc), here it goes:

PG: Khalid El-Ahmin- NCAA champion who won a starting job for the Bulls in his rookie season despite being a second round pick. Amazing in pick n rolls due to a torch of a j and an uncanny ability to pass from strange angles. Unfortunately, he was too fat and short to guard anyone and was forced overseas where guarding slow ass euro guards wasn’t such an issue .

SG: Daquan Cook- In high school Cook was the best guard in a loaded class that included Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. Cook was the best perimeter defender and probably the best slashing guard in the class as well.  However, as soon as he gained a jump shot he stopped doing all the things that set him apart and just started hoisting away at every opportunity.  Had he kept d’ing up and slashing to go along with his new found J, he would’ve had a LONG NBA career instead of a 5 year flash in the pan.

SF: Darius Miles- Came into the league looking like the heir to Scottie Pippen as a do-it-all SF with unlimited potential. While injuries certainly played a part in his lack of sustained success, his limited BBalIQ was more to blame (IMO). With his size and skill there was no reason he couldn’t have filled a Cliff Robinson type role until he was 35, however his inability to make decent decisions on either end had him out of the league well before his 30th birthday.

PF: Stromile Swift: if there is a bigger waste of physical talent in the history of the league I’d love to know who it is. This man was 6’11" with a pterodactyl like wingspan and a monster vertical to boot. Unfortunately, Swift was not just too lazy to ever develop any skills, he was also too dumb to remember plays or scouting reports.  Never saw a shot fake he couldn’t block. At times he looked like he was in a video game with the block button stuck down.

Richard Dumas – a great piece for Barkley’s Phoenix Suns in the year he won MVP (92-93?), went right off the rails after that..

    Derrick Coleman
    Kenny Anderson
    Roy Tarpley

All three of these could have been anything

A lot of people on this list are tall people, 7-footers who played for the money and did not like the game of basketball.

Not great for their teams, but they did get a lot of money.  Some on this list did win, Odom and Bynum, so not achieving a player’s potential doesn’t always mean the team suffers.

Olowokandi, maybe as well as not putting in effort he just wasn’t good.  He played in college against nobody, and that tricked enough people into thinking his stats were real, against real players in the NBA.

One T Thomas was mentioned, and now another, Tyrus Thomas.  Bulls thought he was worth L Aldridge.  Thomas never developed his game, didn’t find a shot, so the talent the Bulls saw never really appeared.

Lamar Odom, Boris Diaw, Rasheed Wallace come to mind as less conventional options, as they did carve out very nice careers for themselves. But all 3 just kinda went through the motions it seems, which is fine, really. If you’re successful at your job without putting in extra work then you cant really get mad.

But they could have been absolutely transcendent stars if they wanted to. Sheed was the perfect big, skill-wise. Would be a game changer in todays NBA with his unique ability to stretch the floor and protect the rim. Just was content with being good, not great. Diaw’s combination of quick feet and deft feel for the game make him a difference maker even with his croissant-eating ways. With some desire he could have been LeBron-lite. Odom we all know, no real holes in his game, just lacked the desire to play defense and be great. His size and ballhandling combination could have made him one of those stars ahead of his time.

Believe it or not, I actually think you could make a case that shaq belongs in this category. I know he was still the most dominant player in the world during his prime, but he was just a guy who lived off his immense physical advantages. Imagine if he had the work ethic of say a Hakeem olajuwon. Imagine if he had really kept himself in shape and developed his overall basketball skills.

arguably the best center in history.  he got lazy but i dont’ think any center could deal with Shaq prime.

Olajuwon (my top 2 favorite players all time), destroyed a young Shaq.

I think Shaq would have abused Russell (please, the guy was 6’10” playing in the 50s and 60s),

Chamberlain is interesting due to his athleticism and his long legs.  Shaq and Wilt would’ve been a good matchup.

Shaq and Hakeem would I think go toe to toe, skill vs. power.

Shaq and Kareem I think Kareem would win that matchup.

Aside from Kareem, everyone else there is no guarantee that they could handle prime Shaq.

Dajuan Wagner should not he mentioned here due to his collitis desease. If someone wants to see a sad story google his wiki page.

Someone we forgot about so far is Robert Swift. Can’t really think about what kind of career he wasted just due to stupidity.

About half a year ago I started a topic about players who never fulfilled their talent because of being lazy. Cannot find it, but I remember Shawn Kemp being one of the guys mentioned.

Tyrus Thomas was super impressive in college – I was always waiting around for him to turn it around in the pros.

No one has mentioned Royce White – guy had the talent to be a top 10 guy from his draft class but now just sits around on twitter all day, out of shape and isn’t even trying…..

Kobe said as great as he was, Shaq was very lazy. Jalen Rose also said Shaq could have been the best ever if he had a better work ethic.

I may be alone on this but I considered Perry Jones to be a prospect with good potential coming in. Maybe not all star potential, but at least important player on the first team potential.

Rashad McCants to me is perhaps the most dissapointing player to wear a UNC uni.  So many guys that are in the NBA right now that possess maybe 1/10th of his talent.  Too bad he could not take criticism nor got the psychological treatment he needed to be successful.

Josh Smith…If he put more time in learning basketball iq, and become more coachable and worked hard on his shooting he would’ve been an nba all teamer

OK, You guys might be too young, but Chris Washburn in the 1986 draft was the 3rd pick and full of potential. he was gone in just a few years. Best known for getting the signal to go into the game but DIDIN’T have his sneakers tied up. NBA contract and you can’t even have your sneakers laced up ??!!!???!!!

that same year, College POY Walter Berry (comparable to Beasely) just didn’t want to practice or play a lick of defense. Was eventually kicked out of the league, when he tried to stab a teammate with a butter knife. WTF??? SMDH!!!!
