McDunkinSources: Antoine Walker to play in Idaho
Former NBA All-Star Antoine Walker intends to launch his latest comeback with the D-League’s Idaho Stampede, according to sources close to the situation.
After years of legal and financial woes, Walker first must pass a background check that all D-Leaguers are subjected to before he can sign with the league, sources said.
But plans are already in place for Walker’s rights to be claimed by the Stampede, who are coached by former NBA guard Randy Livingston, as long as there are no snags with background review.
D-League Blogger Scott Schroeder of AOL FanHouse was the first to report Walker’s intention to sign with the NBA’s 16-team developmental league.
Iowa’s Othyus Jeffers Named NBA D-League Performer of the Week
Othyus Jeffers of the Iowa Energy was today named NBA Development League Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Nov. 21.
A 6-5, 200-pound guard/forward, Jeffers led Iowa to a 2-1 record for the week, averaging 25.0 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals. Iowa earned a 111-103 win over Dakota on Monday and split back-to-back games against Tulsa on Friday and Saturday.
Jeffers put up 32 points, 18 rebounds and four assists in Iowa’s 123-111 victory at Tulsa on Friday. Though the 66ers earned a 116-108 win over the Energy on Saturday, Jeffers had a game-high 31 points, six rebounds and five assists.
UNC’s McCants To Donate NBDL Salary
We are now in the season of giving and North Carolina’s Rashad McCants isn’t taking that seasonal moniker lightly. While McCants tries to break back into the NBA with the D-League’s Austin Legends, he’ll donate his entire salary to Urban Born, a charity that helps inner city youth.
The max salary in the D-League is $25,000. During his time as an NBA player, McCants made $7.4 million. But he’s always worked with charities, including Urban Born, before.
Call up Candidates
Othyus Jeffers, Iowa – Jeffers continued his strong start to the 2010-11 season by earning Performer of the Week honors after averaging 31.5 points over the two weekend games in Tulsa. If Jeffers does not make the move to the NBA soon, he will be one of the top candidates for this year’s Most Valuable Player award. View video highlights.
Alan Anderson, New Mexico – Anderson continued his offensive explosion this weekend with 32 points on 12-19 shooting in a loss to Utah. The former Michigan State star currently leads the NBA D-League with 29.3 points per game. Anderson’s offensive production isn’t coming just as a result of taking a lot of shots, because he is shooting an outstanding .622 (28-45) from the field. View video highlights.
Antonio Daniels, Texas – After a week off, Daniels followed up on his strong debut by leading the Legends to a weekend sweep of the Idaho Stampede. The NBA veteran looks to be the top NBA D-League option at point guard and is stuffing the stat sheet with 18.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 7.3 assists per game. View video highlights.
Joe Alexander, Texas – The former lottery pick of the Bucks decided to take his game to the NBA D-League and he enjoyed a stellar debut weekend for the Texas Legends. The athletic 6-8 forward averaged 19.5 points and 13.0 rebounds over his first two games.
Courtney Sims, Iowa – Sims didn’t get into the flow in his most recent game, scoring just three points against Tulsa on Saturday. Despite the off game, he still looks like the top center currently on an NBA D-League roster with 19.4 points on .681 (32-47) shooting and 9.8 rebounds per game.Trey Johnson, Bakersfield – By now, you know what you’re getting from Johnson on the NBA D-League level, as the Bakersfield stalwart is usually good for about 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists per game along with a solid shooting percentage. The former Cavalier currently checks in at second in the NBA D-League with 24.0 points per game. Johnson’s consistency stands out when looking at his Bakersfield career, as he rarely has an off game even when the Jam are struggling.
Nick Fazekas, Reno – The first overall pick in the draft hasn’t disappointed on his way to helping the Bighorns win their first four games. Fazekas may not be the first offensive option on Reno’s roster, but he is still close to averaging a double-double with 16.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. The former Maverick and Clippers forward has been very efficient in the paint, connecting on .535 (23-43) of his field-goal attempts. He may not be the greatest athlete among NBA D-League big men but his insticts for the game make him very productive.
Sean Williams, Texas – The former Nets center is finding his niche with the Legends by taking advantage of his offensive opportunities and blocking shots. Williams is averaging 13.3 points on .593 (16-27) shooting along with 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. The knock on Williams early into his Texas tenure is that his aggresiveness on defense is leading to foul trouble, and NBA teams might want to see someone with his athletic ability grab a few more rebounds.
Zabian Dowdell, Tulsa – Dowdell has been able to fill the shoes of Mustafa Shakur quite nicely in Tulsa, as he is an offensive threat and also has taken very good care of the ball so far. The former Virigina Tech star is averaging 20.3 points per game for the 66ers, and has passed for 21 assists while only committing six turnovers. Dowdell has good size for the point guard spot at 6-3 and can move up the rankings if he continues to improve his shooting, which currently stands at .459 (28-61). Taking a closer look at the shooting stats, Dowdell has shot over .500 in his last three games after a 5-19 outing on opening night.
Chris Johnson, Dakota – An intriguing prospect, Johnson has come on after a slow start and enters the week averaging 20.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game. He came up two blocks short of a rare type of triple-double on Friday with 25 points, 15 rebounds, and eight blocks in a loss to Sioux Falls. The 6-11, 210-pound Johnson has a slight frame to guard NBA big men and will have to cut down on the turnovers that have limited his production early, but he is an interesting player to watch this season.
Knicks Are Interested In Vernon Goodridge
Vernon Goodridge, the first round pick of the Springfield Armor, has apparently caught the eye of Knicks president Donnie Walsh.Goodridge is currently averaging 5.5 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 1.5 bpg in four games for the Armor this season, fouling out twice which has limited his playing time to 20 minutes per game.
Mavericks Assign Beaubois, Jones To Texas Legends
The Dallas Mavericks have assigned guards Rodrigue Beaubois and Dominique Jones to the Texas Legends, the Mavericks’ NBA Development League affiliate, it was announced today. The assignment marks the 10th and 11th times in the 2010-11 season an NBA player has been assigned to an NBA D-League affiliate, and it is the first assignment for both players.
Philadelphia 76ers Assign Craig Brackins To Springfield
Philadelphia 76ers forward Craig Brackins was assigned to the Springfield Armor, the 76ers’ NBA Development League affiliate, it was announced today. The assignment marks the 12th time in the 2010-11 season an NBA player has been assigned to an NBA D-League affiliate, and it is the first assignment for Brackins, a rookie out of Iowa State.
