How’s it going, forum? I have just put a lot of effort into my first mock draft for the 2013 NBA Draft, and so I thought that I would share it with you to get some feedback, and ultimately discuss ranking prospects. I would like to clarify a few points that many of you may be curious about before you actually look over my mock draft.

1. I based the majority of the mock draft on specific team needs, with only a few selected “best player available.”

2. I have Alex Len going 6th to the Sacramento Kings. I have him slotted to go to the Kings because of Sacramento’s problem with controlling DeMarcus Cousin’s emotions both on the court, in the locker room, and within the organization. I think that Sacramento MAY (not WILL) look at possible trade destinations for DeMarcus Cousins this summer. If that is the case, I do believe that Alex Len could be a very good value pick here. If not, he could still serve as a valuable backup center which you could use as a possible trade chip once he reaches his full potential. Other possible picks in this slot could have been Shabazz Muhammed (SF), Victor Oladipo (SG/SF), and even Cody Zeller (C).

3. I have A LOT of International players being selected in my mock draft. Reason being is simply that the draft class is very weak, and by college standards, it’s a bit disappointing. However, I think that the mystery behind International prospects can and will take this NBA Draft by storm, and this draft will feature the most International prospects that it has produced in a long time. Especially in the final 10 picks, where NBA GMs have proved to take interest in foreign players with a lot of potential.

So, there is a little background knowledge heading into my 2013 NBA Mock Draft. So without further ado, here’s my draft.

A few thoughts:

1) 11 seems high for McCollum
2) I’ve read good things about Tony Snell, but I’m not sure he’s a first rounder.
3) I’m with you on the Schroeder hype, but I’m not sure it’ll carry him into the top 20.

Other than that, pretty good. I agree that there’s going to be more international picks than usual this year.

not sure exactly why Brooklyn would draft Erick Green, they already have Deron Williams, a capable backup in CJ Watson, and Tyshawn Taylor as a last resort

I think Jordan Aboudou will get selected though

In my honest opinion, I think Erick Green is more of an undersized shooting guard rather than a point guard. This is why I have Brooklyn selecting Green, so that he can split time with MarShon Brooks at the 2, and move Joe Johnson over to the 3.

I mean I have my own likes and dislikes but it has merit. Also anytime someone else’s draft causes you to change yours a bit (I am bumping up Snell after watching highlights, and considering that Len to Sacramento scenario) you have to give someone credit.

Steven Adams is way too low. Because this is a weak draft, and the fact that this draft has a ton of big men, teams will take advantage of Centers/big men with high upside as they don’t come around very often. Adams is one of the many bigmen available in this draft and does have high upside. So I think it is possible that he could be taken as early as late lottery. The many big men in this draft are listed below:
Nerlens Noel (Top 3)
Alex Len (Top 5-10
Cody Zeller (Top 5-10)
Kelly Olynyk (Late Lottery)
Steven Adams (Late lottery)
Mason Plumlee Mid first round)
Rudy Gobert (Mid First round)
Gorgui Dieng Mid First Round)
Lucas Noguiera (Late first round) (All of these big men are first round locks!)

Kelly Olynyk is more of a stretch 4 in the mold of Ersan Illyasova. The Blazers are set at the 4 with JJ Hickson and LA, I don’t think they need another one. Unless JJ Hickson plans on leaving but even then I wouldn’t consider drafting Olynyk because I don’t think he would fit within the Blazers system. I consider him perfect for OKC or Dallas. OKC could use him to replace Nick Collison and he could space the floor, providing more room for Westbrook and Durant. Dallas could draft him to learn behind Dirk and possibly start once he retires.

I almost forgot to add Jeff Withey to the list of bigmen. He is also a first round lock and should go Late first round. The following Bigmen have high upside:
Nerlens Noel
Alex Len
Cody Zeller
Steven Adams
Mason Plumlee
Rudy Gobert
Lucas Noguiera.
So 10 big men total and all of them are first round locks with 7 of them having high upside!!

I like this draft a lot! Of course I have a few opinions on “too high” and “too low”, but the argument could be made for any of these guys to be placed where you placed them. I also like the fact that you have Ledo being drafted, but not super high like some would mistakenly put him. Here are my quick high/low etc thoughts (and again, I like your order of things, so nothing is blatantly off):

Too high:
20. Tim Hardaway Jr – Although I think the Bulls will certainly take a long look at him with their hole at SG, I just think he needs to work on his decision making skills and isn’t quite worth the 20th pick. His skills will probably translate better than a lot of SGs in this draft, so it wouldn’t shock me to see him go this high. My range for him: 31-36.

22. Erick Green – He owns a huge talent at scoring, which every team would love off of their bench. He can easily play SG in today’s league where a lot of teams play multiple PG sized players at once. I just don’t think he’ll crack the first round. He’s kind of a safe play (which can be good), but I think at 22 someone might go with more of a high upside guy. My range for him: 33-45

Too low:
17. Giannis Adetokoubo – Not that I have any better suggestion of where he should be drafted, but I just think that they hype will make him ultimately be drafted higher than this in a very “Biyombo” fashion. My range for him: 10-15.

28. Jeff Withey – No he won’t blow anyone away as the answer for their starting center spot, but he is a legit 7 footer that rebounds, blocks shots, and shoots over 70% from the line. I think someone takes him earlier to complete their frontline rotation. My range for him: 16-25.
