valentineI’d like to do a Poll on whether the 2016 Lottery will be rigged.
- Yes
- No
I speak to many people about basketball, and it seems that opinions are split. If I were to guess, it would probably be 50% in either camp. So let’s find out!
For those that do believe it’s rigged….does it annoy you? Or do you believe it’s for the "good of the game".
I will count the votes in 48 hours.

Hype Machine50% split thus far.
Personally I think Silver and Stern are cut from the same cloth….being his understudy for years and hand-picked successor.
That Wiggins draft conveniently fell into place for Lebron, Nike, ESPN, The Cavs reunion…that deal with Love was already in place before the draft.
That was on Silvers watch..and the odds were remarkably slim. The revenue was as real as it gets tho…
Could have just been lucky. We’ll never know.

oyoyerParticipantYes. I think the NBA rigs their drafts all the time. Not just for money and ratings but also for favors and politics. So since Silver stuffed Colangelo down the Sixers throats, I expect the payoff is the frozen envelope.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantOnly if the Lakers win I guess.
All this talk about the lottery being rigged is ridiculous. If the lottery was rigged why would Minnesota wind up with the top pick over new York and Los Angeles. What market do you think the league would prefer the best talent go to. Love when fans don’t end up in the position they want and then just automatically assume its because the lottery is rigged. It is actually a lottery for a reason.

Hype MachineGood points…However I’m not sure people think it’s rigged every year. I personally don’t think it was rigged last year.
But so far it’s almost a 50-50 split so it can’t be that "ridiculous" for people to form this view.
0- Posted on: Tue, 01/12/2016 - 6:23pm #1036355
Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantSo its only rigged some years? What makes them decide which years to rig it then? Was it rigged the year Cleveland lucked into the top pick and got the grand prize of Anthony Bennett? Was it rigged when Cleveland got 3 number 1s in 4 years? Did the NBA really want Anthony Davis in new Orleans that bad or Blake Griffin on the clippers? I just don’t buy it.

Hype MachineThe lotteries I suspect were rigged…
New York Knicks select Patrick Ewing…obvious one
Orlando Select Webber (turned into Penny & Shaq duo despite 1% chance)
Cleveland tank for Lebron (Hometown Hero with homesickness issues)
New Orleans (Owned by NBA) win Brow Sweepstakes
Cleveland get #1 pick (despite tiny odds) which facilitates Lebrons return to an instant contender
Theres probably more…I can’t pretend to know what kind of wheeling and dealing goes on behind the scenes.

HitsterParticipantSo what do we call rigged, the Lakers winning it, Philly getting top pick, T-Wolves getting another top pick, NOP getting another top pick.
These teams will have a legit chance of winning the lottery and certainly getting a top 3 pick.
The Lakers ended up with 2nd pick last year, if they had come out top would that have seemed rigged or if the Knicks had come out top etc.
I don’t think the Lottery is rigged basically!
I just wish they would do the actual lottery draw live as it would make great TV to see all the Team Front Offices sat there with their bingo type cards and see the reaction when one team gets the top pick actually as it occurs.

MatosParticipantGonna say this once. There is no way it isn’t rigged. There’s pretty much reasoning every year as to why teams get the jump. And to top it all off, NBA isn’t helping its case by making it a televised event with commercials in between. When’s the last time 1,2, & 3 worst teams actually went 1, 2 & 3. NBA wont allow that to happen.

Robb_CParticipantWhen Cleveland landed multiple number one picks after LeBron left, thats when I knew the NBA was being very slick with the lottery process.. You gotta understand the NBA is a business, the owners and silver want to protect the rev share as much as possible.. 100% no doubt in my mind if the NBA sees a player that could benefit a particular team more so than the next.. you better believe they make it happen..

Butter13ParticipantIF the draft is rigged, my guess would be that the league would not let two teams in the top 4 largest US markets continue to stink (especially the 76ers and their putrid 4-35 record), so as a result, the league would likely attempt to help BOTH simultaneously by giving the 76ers the #1 pick while having the Lakers retain their top 3 protected pick and end up with the #2 pick (instead of it going to the 76ers this draft). I know some of you may ask "Why not give the Lakers the #1 pick??" Well, that probably wouldn’t happen because by giving the Lakers the #1 pick, the 76ers now slide to #2 (Simmons is considered more "NBA ready" than Ingram right now) AND lose the Lakers top 3 protected pick this draft and I doubt the league wants to see the 76ers have ANOTHER incredibly bad year and cost the league even more money.
This way, both teams get a potential franchise player and can really start to build as I’m sure the league desperately wants such large market teams to do well, because at the end of the day, the NBA is a business and having two of your largest market teams stink for multiple years is very bad for the league and its image.

MatosParticipantSixers are purposely trying to lose. Which means they wouldnt be this bad for this long if they actually tried to win. They’d be floating around mid conference record, which is ok with the league. Punishing the Sixers for tanking is more likely because it gets them to stop this method, actually try to go out there and win games, maybe add some pieces.
0- Posted on: Thu, 01/14/2016 - 7:57am #1036804
Butter13ParticipantWhy assume they are purposely trying to lose? Ever think that maybe they just don’t have any desire to load up the roster with mediocre players (ie Wes Matthew, Kris Humpries, etc) like many other NBA teams and end up in the exact same place they were in 2010? The Sixers are trying to build a contender, not end up 35-47 year in and year out. The goal is to move forwards, not remain stagnant or move backwards.
Also, with Colangelo there now, there’s no way the NBA punishes them. He’s the head of US Basketball for crying out loud…there’s almost zero chance of any "punishment" at this point. Moreover, the NBA has already punished the Sixers by giving them the #3 pick in the past two drafts so them sliding to #3 or #4 this year would be flat out ridiculous. Three years in a row with the #3 pick? Yea…don’t think so.

joe2324Participantit would be rigged if the sixers fall out of the top 3 and the lakers get the number 1 pick because that would mean the league is punishing the sixers for "tanking" by purposely giving them a lower pick.

llperezJust for the record for those unaware of the process, there are over 30 independent witnesses who watch the drawing. All14 teams in the lotto have a representative to watch the balls being pulled( these are not the 14 team reps that we see on tv sitting and waiting, those guys are in fact unaware). There are 12 members of the media from 12 different regions of the country that are allowed access to watch the drawing of the balls in person. There is an independent auditing firm based out of London that oversees the entire process as well. To think that all of these walks of life representing each team, the national media and legal firms would all work together and the nba would risk even one of them opening their mouths and bringing the league to its knees simply so they can assure Kylie Irving went to clevland or deangelo Russell went to the lakers is silly.
So that leaves the only realistic “fix” possibility being the balls were somehow rigged with magnets or something. I suppose that’s possible, but again the nba isn’t some struggling business trying to make ends meet. The lakers are about to miss the playoffs for the third straight season. The Knicks have been irrelevant since the 90’s. Yet the Mona is a multi billion dollar business on the verge of signing a massive new television revenue deal, salaries are at an all time high, teams are being sold for record numbers. And you think they would risk all that to make sure the Bulls get Derrick rose or the Pelicans get Anthony Davis because clearly that’s worth the risk?
In other words, no I do not believe it is rigged. If I did I would be pissed at the lakers constantly trading their picks year after year.

Robb_CParticipantWhere the smoke is, fire usually isnt to far away..
Like I said before, If the NBA sees an opportunity to place a player on a team that will benefit the growth of the NBA they will make it happen..
Derrick Rose to the Bulls was marketing/PR execs wet dream.
Anthony Davis and the Pelicans securing the nunber 1 pick so the league could make the Pelicans look more attractive to a buyer
Cleveland landing multiple 1st picks after Lebron left to help stop the bleeding of a rebuilding process and the money loss from his move
Im not saying it happens all the time.. But these are real strong cases of the the NBA doing draft manipulation..

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantHey Hype, bump this thread and comment after the lotto drawing. I will put my reputation on the line here for the naysayers. I’m PREDICTING RIGHT NOW that the Lakers, Sixers, Celtics (even if they wind up with lotto picks) wont get the first pick. It will go to a small market team (if they miss the playoffs of course, as they are currently only a few games out of it), and I will explain why that particular team afterwards. Just to up the ante, I am guaranteeing (sp?) that the Lakers keep their pick. Let me give a clue as who the winner will be just for fun: The franchise has had the #1 pick less than two times in its history. If I’m right, it wont be hard proof of a conspiracy, hence the existence of conspiracy. But it will add undeniable evidence to the possibility/reality of a semi-rigged system. If I’m wrong? I will take off my tin-foil hat and proceed to eat it…
