GrandmamaParticipantHe’s definitely the best PF ever, but he isn’t a top 5 player all-time. Guys I’d rank ahead of him are Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Bird, Shaq, and Kobe. He’s in that 8-10 range.

ballislyfe25ParticipantI don’t think it’s fair to say he’s not top 5 all time. It can definitely be argued and what he’s doing/been apart of is basically unprecedented. Even Pop says everything they do is based off Duncan. He’s been the best player on a team that wins 50 games every year and is one win away from getting their 5th title over nearly a two decade long run.
Who can we argue is definitively better than Duncan? Jordan? Who else? I’m not sure anyone. If Pop doesn’t sub him out, they could be going for a three-peat next year. Let that sink in for a second.
Duncan is just so impressive, as he has suceed at the highest level through different eras of basketball. Give me Tim Duncan to start my team with over any big guy throughout the history of the NBA, and I arguably have the best big guy.

SpartanGloryParticipantI’ve heard some people say Lebron is top 5 already, which is bs. I think you make make a very compelling argument for Duncan. I know the all time greats are just that for a reason, and I love Bird and MJ, but who’s to say that they would still be better if they played in the same era? Duncan is the man and if he’s not top 5 he’s for sure top 8.

AstroParticipant…is King of The Millenials, and of course they need him to be a top 5 player to validate their specialness and awesomeness, haha.
Of course, all future generations will just look at the (now likely) 3 Finals losses and go “meh.”

christebasParticipantwhowever thinks he’s retiring , he’s not, despte the bad grandpa pants. – he just got divorced. His ex-wife will get half of everything he’s made over the last 12 years through 2013 or thereabout. Ouch. He’s still rich as hell but at this rate (the way Pop uses him), he can play another 3-4 years easily and still be very effective as long as he stays healthy. What else is he gonna do, join the TNT crew?

druneave3ParticipantI agree and rate him the best PF ever but to say top 5 with no doubt is very difficult to do. I have him just cracking the top 10 but everyone has their own opinion. Top 5 EASY is quite the statement. I am stating the obvious here but that is Mt. Rushmore status. Duncan far better than possible candidates such as Wilt, Russel, Big O, Magic, Shaq, LeBron, and some others?
His clothes are why I love him and Pop and the Spurs way and all of that. Add to that Leonard’s interviews after his game 3 performance with his modest and shy nature. Then coming out and playing like he has the past two games. They are such a nice change of pace from the flashy, fashion savvy, camera-happy teams/players in the league and society in general. Strictly business. I am so glad they will most likely be winning yet another championship. I was thinking they would win just one more before Duncan calls it quits but who knows……

the27guyParticipantIf he were a PF, he’d be the best ever, but he’s always played like a center in my opinion, and I think he’s the third best ever…..
My list goes like this…
1. MJ
2. Russell
3. Magic
4. Wilt
5. Duncan
If you compare longevity, consistency in winning, statistics, and championships, I’m not sure how you put Oscar, Bird, Kareem, Hakeem, Kobe, Lebron, or Shaq above him. You can maybe make a case for Kareem, but Kareem had another top ten player there for every one of his championships (Oscar or Magic), so I give the nod to Duncan. I don’t see, when you do the math, that you can argue anybody else on that list has had a better basketball career than Tim Duncan.

stifler101Participantthanks for being the only person on this thread to not buy into the Spurs organization’s ridiculous ploy to get Duncan as many All-Star starts as possible by listing Duncan, their CENTER since he was drafted, as a PF. even when they had the Admiral, Duncan played the center position more than Robinson did lol. they knew Shaq and eventually Yao would get all the center votes, so they listed Duncan as a PF…simple. if the all-star voting was the format it changed to this season with 3 frontcourt players and no center distinction, Duncan wouldn’t have been listed a PF, especially after Robinson retired…out of respect for him.
i digress though…that’s always bugged me. but don’t get me wrong, much respect to Duncan’s career. definitely top 10 if they win it this year, which i’m thinking will happen Sunday

tidhoParticipantNo way is he top 5, he is the best PF ever though.
There are really a couple ways to look at top 5 though. One way is best player, the other is best career. Those are often two very different sets of people, for instance Larry Bird is easily top five best player, but his body didn’t hold up and he’s not top 5 career. Duncan has never even been in the conversation as the best player of his era so he’s really only in the running for best career. Top 10 seems like a certainty but how do you put him over Russell or Kareem if that’s the measure (along with Magic, Mike, Wilt, etc.).
…should also be noted that the Spurs haven’t actually won this year’s championship yet.

Memphis MadnessParticipantFive titles, 3 Finals MVP’s, back-to-back regular season MVP’s.
How many guys have done that?
Magic, Michael, and Timmy.
At a minimum he is the best power forward EVER, and on the Mount Rushmore of Big Men (Russell, Wilt, Kareem, and Duncan).
I can see him being ranked sixth all time after this series behind Jordan, Wilt, Kareem, Russell, and Magic.
If he matches Kareem by playing 20 seasons, then I think he can move ahead of Magic, and maybe even one of those centers.
It actually looks like the Spurs could form a mini-dynasty within a mega-dynasty with the emergence of Kawhi Leonard as Mister Finals and Danny Green as a really good sidekick on the wing.
Another title next year would put Tim Duncan in Kareem territory: 6 rings, back to back titles, more playoff minutes, more playoff points, rebounds, and double doubles. Another all-star game and another great regular season.
If Timmy ends up like Kareem and plays into his early forties then I could see him getting SEVEN rings which would put him in the top 3 of all-time.
Wilt put up some MONSTER numbers, but he did a lot in a Video Game Stats season, and his 100 points wasn’t exactly in the flow of the game.
6 or 7 rings could put Duncan past Wilt.
If Timmy, Pop, Kawhi, and the Spurs get a 3Peat then Duncan could retire as the second greatest player ever behind only Michael Jordan.
