mikeyvthedonParticipantNew York Post made a list of the top 25 HS B-Ball players of the last 25 years of New York City basketball. Remember, this is just the city and not the entire state, so if names are missing, than they more than likely did not play in the 5 Burroughs Area (Elton Brand is one I thought of, though I do not know if Peekskill is considered NYC or not). Some definite street ball legends in Lloyd "Swee’ Pea" Daniels and Conrad "McNasty" McRae. Also has Kareem "Best Kept Secret" Reid, Born Ready, Bassy, Malik Sealy, Julius Hodge, Felipe "The Gift who was Cursed (by Sports Illustrated)" Lopez and what list would be complete without Omar "The Legend" (I loved Omar Cook, but I had to get that shot in there). New York has produced some great talent though, a lot of strong PG’s, had that one year where they had 3 PG’s in the McD’s All-American game (Cook, Taliek Brown and Andre Barrett). The article even has a poll where you can vote for a top 5. I voted for Kenny Anderson, Lamar Odom, Jamal Mashburn, Stephon Marbury and Ron Ron. Swee Pea and McNasty from what I have read could have been as talented as pretty much any of those players, but they made tragic mistakes that kept them from doing so. Still, good list of some good players.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI should have written that McRae died too soon, and I apologize. I did not recall whether his death was drug related or not, but he died running wind sprints and I sincerely apologize as I should have researched this before I wrote it. Very sorry, as I had read a book years ago about players and drugs about Lloyd Daniels. The book featured McRae, but nothing I find shows him making any mistakes with drugs that would have any cause for his tragic death. RIP McNasty and again, I sincerely apologize.

PureshooterParticipantHonestly, I’m kind of surprised that NYC hasn’t turned out more superstars over the years.

wenichParticipantCool, just didn’t want his death to be misconstrued. Conrad was good people, his demeanor on the court was much different than his personality off of it. I assume you live in NY, Foxy Browns brother Anton has a summer league at Dean St in Brooklyn in Conrads name that has some sick young talent every summer (I think it’s for the up and coming 8th and 9th graders) you should check it out.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI do not, I live in Toronto. I would totally check it out if I were there. I found this on SLAM online, but I felt like I should just credit the New York Post. I am glad you had a chance to know Conrad and again, if I could edit what I wrote, I would write it differently. You live in NY? Know any good players left off of the list? Any up and comers getting slept on?

Lotto StudParticipantI was high on Kenny Satterfield & Omar Cook. I would like to know why is it once New York PG’s go to the NBA they fall off the map?

wenichParticipantNYC basketball has fallen off since those players of the late 80’s early 90’s…that class of Red, Reese, Derrick Phelps and Khalid Reeves who were all McDonalds All-Americans and who all played for Riverside Church also had Jamaal Mashburn in that class who wasn’t a McDonalds selection because he played for the Gauchos. I think that class also had Anthony Cade who was probably better than all of them at the time but never panned out. In my opinion the players that NYC has produced since then overall has been garbage other than an Odom, Artest, Shamgod, Kareem Reid, Rafer Alston, Erick Barkley of the early to mid 90’s. NYC used to be great now it is just the most overrated basketball city in the country.

wenichParticipantI don’t really follow H.S basketball much anymore because of what I stated before, I think it has just fallen off. But for your question since I think the article is talking about H.S players Rob Werdann and Gary Irvin I think were put on that list just to balance out the time frame of the article lol. Jermaine "sunshine" Smith, Charles Jones, Booger, Arnold "A-Train" Bernard were some great high school players off the top of my head.

Bossy13ParticipantIf I had to guess, I’d say NY city ball has fallen off because of the streetball culture that exists there. Thats how young guys get their names made. They get the street cred and run with it. The problem is, streetball is a faulty brand of ball if you want to succeed as a pro. A kid in a good system, with good coaching is far more likely to go further than one who spends all his time breaking guys down in front of crowds of gang bangers and other losers that hang around at public parks. The kids like the fan fare they recieve on the streets ( which comes earlier and easier than it would for most playing system ball) and spend too much of their time getting flashy instead of getting skilled.

Lotto StudParticipantWhy is New York players especially PG’s seem to have the best handles. When you look at other parts of their games the only thing they do is pass well, but there ball handling skills be on 1000.
