YoungKINGSParticipantI had to change things up a little bit on this site. I thought it would be interesting to ask the question on who is in your Top 5 worst starting point guards in the NBA. It will definitely make you appreciate the game more because anybody who can start in the NBA gotta be pretty damn good.

MikezParticipantAre we talking actual PG’s or SGs forced into the PG position?
0- Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 1:09am #701145
TomShoeParticipantKemba isn’t as bad as you think. It’s the complete and utter vacuum of talent last season that forced him to take on a primary scoring role. Hopefully with MKG and Taylor on board, and Dunlap as new HBIC, Kemba can really focus on distributing the ball.
Mark my words, the Bobcats will be a very good (in relation to last year) team.

llperezin order
austin rivers(hornets)-i assume he will start at pg unless they go with greives vasquez, but in either case the hornets have undoubtedly the worst pg position in the league
kemba walker(bobcats)-this will prove to be another one of jordan’s mistakes, mark my words. Hes a decent scorer but nothing special
brandon knight(pistons)-i think knight will work out long term, but right now he is still learning the game and working on his skills.
mo williams(jazz)very solid player, but really shouldnt be running a team full time at ths point. His strength is shooting, not passing or setting up teammates or pushing in transition or getting to the rim. All things a team should hope to get out of their starting pg
mario chalmers(heat)-this last spot goes to chalmers just edging out ridnour and hinrich. Chalmers played great in the finals, but reality is that he is a shooter who is allowed to be very average at everything else becasue he plays with the greatest playmaker in the game to hide his weak points.

Wahoo757ParticipantRay Felton and Kemba Walker immediately come to mind.

aamir543Participant^No Jameer Nelson? Not only is he on the decline, he’s astringently overpaid.

llperezi dont care much for jameer, but he isnt worse then the 5 guys i named.

Yandyhere2ParticipantRamon Sessions
Mario Chalmers
Ray Felton
Jose Calderon
Mo Williams
Kemba and B.Knight are not that bad and are very young they have alot of time to develop.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 4:58pm #701090
llperez@yandyhere, i seriously doubt ramon or calderon start next year. Kemba and kyle lowry should be ahead of those guys. As for kemba and knight having time to develop, very true, but thats not what this topic is asking. Its want to know about this season coming up. If you think they are not bottom 5, thats fine and debateable, but you cant bring up their potential as to why they arent bottom 5 right now today.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:02pm #701091
aamir543ParticipantYou can easily make a case that Calderon and Mo Williams are better than Nelson.
Nelson is coming off a season where he averaged 11 and 5 on 42% shooting. Calderon averaged 11 and 8 on 46% shooting. The few games I did see of Calderon you can see that he is a great distributor and can find the open man at ease. Nelson somtimes shoots too much, and he is not the guy he was 3 years ago.
And Mo Williams might also shoot a low percentage at 42% as well, but he is a much more fluid scorer, scores 13 a game and he really isn’t a point guard.
And althogh Ray Felton played like a bottom 5 PG last season, I have faith in him that he can turn it around back in NY.

Greivis Vasquez (who said Rivers was starting?)
Darren Collison
Devin Harris

llperezno idea if rivers is starting which is why i said grevies vasques is the other option to start and said either way the hornets will have the worst starting pg in the league. as for collison and harris, no way are they bottom 5. mo will cant even create for his teammates, kemba is a mid range shooter who struggles defensively and with his ability to create for his teammates. kinght is still learning how to play. give me felton, collison, or harris over those guys any day of the week.

terrancebowerParticipantexcept i’d sub Ray Felton for either DJ augustin/george hill, and devin harris for Isiah Thomas Jr. because he won’t be starting this year. Jeff Teague has to be in the mix too.
These are all very good basketball players btw. It’s a testament to what i like to call the (current) golden age of point guards. These are only 30 teams and easily 35 starting caliber point guards if you count teams with more than one (Calderon, G Hill, D Harris, Aaron Brooks, Andre Miller wont be starting.).
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:26pm #701098
Golden State of MindKendall marshall, is going to be pretty bad his rookie year. Kid cant shoot or score in the lane, got no defense.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:26pm #701097
CodySLCParticipantTrust me, i watched Harris play every game last season. He’s bottom 5, atleast he was last year. At least Mo can shoot.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:27pm #701099
llperezharris probably wont even start anyways, its a good chance teague will start. And at least harris led a team to the playoffs as a starter last year. He still breaks guys down off the dribble.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:27pm #701100
Yandyhere2ParticipantCool.
But I guarantee there are 5 starting PG’s in the NBA worst than B.Knight and K.Walker
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 5:37pm #701103
pistonkidParticipanti go for the pistons they are my team but I do think that brandon knight is one of the 5 worst starting PG’s in the nba.

Greivis Vasquez

pistonkidParticipantIn no particular order…
Chalmers
Vasquez
Felton
Knight
Kemba walker
if kemba walker was any good he would have started every game last season but he lost his place to dj augustin. luckily for kemba, DJ augustin signed for pacers FOR 1 YEAR!!! wtf why only 1 year? like seriously augustin is starting pg for pacers now right???

jmarg25ParticipantGeorge Hill, Kirk Hinrich (hes gonna be starting for Chicago), Chalmers, Kemba, and Jameer Nelson (hes declining rapidly). You are right, it makes me realize that there really aren’t any BAD starting point guards. Guys like George Hill are still solid.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 6:59pm #701113
Golden State of MindRay Ray gonna lose his starting spot to either a 39yo Kidd or 35yo Brazilian.

llperezyet another thread that proves points mean nothing. Seriously, not one argument convinces me my 5 starting pg’s for next season arent the worst. I will admit when people argue with me and make me think about my previous opinion and make me think im wrong, but so far none of that in this thread. Those dudes i named shouldnt be starting for a good team. Chalmers is the best player i named and hes allowed to to be a role player similar to when fish started for the lakers becasue other guys did the play making. Mo will just comes off screens at this point. He cant even really run the point and hasnt been asked to do so in a few years. Lets see how he breaks full court pressure and gets by off the dribble. He pretty much mike bibby at this point. knight and walker aint there yet, maybe soon, but not today. Sorry bobcats and pistons fans.
0- Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 7:35pm #701122
Zeke313ParticipantI’d sub Brandon for Jameer Nelson or Isaiah Thomas
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 2:10pm #701302
Wahoo757ParticipantPeople can’t hang with negativity on this thread. I realized this a while ago. Everyone is saying (insert name here) is going to be great before the draft or during the summer league when in reality the player won’t end up being anything special. Perfect proof of this over optimism is your argument of the 5 worst point guards. You had a totally legitimate argument for your choices but was bombarded with negs for no apparent reason, except for thefact that a lot of people don’t like looking on the downside of things. But who gives a damn about negs anyways? They’re no kind of validation for me, nor should they be for anyone else.

mookieParticipantBK isn’t bottom 5 in the nba. Gotta go with Vazquez, Felton, Nelson, Kemba or DJ augistin, harris.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 07/27/2012 - 7:43pm #701123
Zeke313ParticipantJameer Nelson
Kemba Walker
Isaiah Thomas
Goran Dragic
Mario Chalmers
Raymond Felton is looking real underrated around here he’s better than all the guys I listed.

Zeke313ParticipantSub Dragic for Greivis Vasquez

and1rodman91ParticipantJameer, Chalmers, Kirk Hinrich for Chicago unless somehow teague gets the nod and until rose back, Felton, Devin Harris
You cant put Kemba and Knight in their. They were put into bad situations and had no chance. I think Knight had a good rookie year. But I think its a tossup between Hinrich or Jameer as the worst coming into next year
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 3:14am #701150
B-ball fanParticipant1. Austin Rivers: I’m guessing he starts for NO. If he doesn’t, this spot belongs to Vasquez.
2. Kirk Hinrich: He has lost a step in the past couple of years.
3. Kemba Walker: He will get better, but I can’t really give him the nod over many other starting pgs.
4. Mo Williams: Did not have a good year last year, but maybe he will rebound with the Jazz.
5. Brandon Knight: He will get better, but isn’t a great starter yet. Just gets the nod over Kidd/Felton, whoever starts for the Knicks, as they at least are veterans known for their leadership. Knight will likely surpass them soon.
llperez’s list was pretty good. I don’t see many explanations for all the negs.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 4:10am #701154
rhamnlacsonParticipanti would go with beno udrich when he was starting as a pg in an nba team
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 5:36am #701168
SwatLakeCityParticipantI like and1rodman’s list or CodySLC’s list. I don’t necessarily agree with Ray Felton but he was pretty bad last year. Hopefully he’ll turn it around this year in NYC, but we’ll see.
You can’t put Kemba or Knight on this list because they were forced into starting and put into bad situations. Kemba was on the worst team in the league. When that happens you are depended on to score no matter how much your position defines that you pass and create for your teammates. There were no teammates for him to create for, what else did you expect him to do? And Knight, same thing but with a little more scrutiny because the Pistons are better. There was no one else to start at PG other than him. Who else are you gonna start? Will Bynum? and Rodney Stuckey is 2 guard so don’t even get me started with him.
Mo Williams is actually not too shabby. Sure he’s not great, but at this point for Jazz fans anybody is better than Devin Harris. He was just YUCK. I think he’s a better passer than some realize. He’s a good pick and roll point guard, jazz run that system a lot so he should do pretty well in Utah. And remember he played pretty well alongside Lebron in Cleveland. Had some of his best years there, and he didn’t do too bad once Lebron left. The only reason why the Cavs traded him was so they could rebuild wth younger players, not because he sucked. And he wasn’t supposed to start when Chris Paul was in town, so he’s had to play shooter for a long time. Bench subs are not supposed to pass too often. Their job is to score or play solid defense. Just watch him this year, you’ll see that Devin Harris is much worse than Mo Williams.
Derek Fisher proved for like 5 years straight that you don’t have to be a good point guard to lead a team to the playoffs. As long as your team has someone else to do the creating than you’ll be just fine. But just because you made the playoffs does not mean you are a good starting point guard. You might argue that Utah does not have anybody else to create, but you would be wrong stating that. Utah is a very good passing team. I said team, meaning everybody on that team is required to be somewhat good at passing. Even if you’re a center. If you can’t pass, you don’t play for the Jazz. If you can’t create for your teammates, you don’t play for the Jazz. Its that simple, they don’t care what your position is or what your role on the team is, if you can’t create for your teammates then you don’t play for Utah. So everybody on that team creates which allowed them to make the playoffs. Devin Harris did not lead them there, Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson led them there. Same with Derek Fisher, I think everyone would agree that Kobe led the Lakers to the playoffs not Fish.
So with that I’ll name my 5 worst starting PG’s
Kirk Heinrich
Jameer Nelson
Mario Chalmers
Darren Collison
Ray Felton
I didn’t put Austin Rivers on my list even though he did cross my mind because the season hasn’t even started yet, so I can’t judge him too quickly without being unfair. I’d have to say putting that list together was tough. I kept thinking of bad starting point guards last year who won’t start this year, like Devin Harris, Jose Calderon, and Isaiah Thomas Jr. (I believe Aaron Brooks will start over him) Tells how good you have to be to start at PG in the NBA.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 6:38am #701176
IndianaBasketballParticipantI tried to do this and it was harder than I thought.
The only person I was dead set on was Greivis Vasquez.
My list would look something like Llperez’s and B-ball fan’s. My only disagreement with Llperez’s list is Mario Chalmers. Not saying he’s great, but I don’t think he’s one of the bottom five.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 7:53am #701193
kobyzParticipantMario Chalmers outplayed George Hill in last playoff series, he embarrass him with his offense time and again!
0- Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 9:53am #701231
IndianaBasketballParticipantI disagree with you… He really only outplayed Hill one game and that was game three.
There’s a difference playing off of LeBron and D. Wade and Hibbert and Granger though.
Hill is better than Chalmers by a decent margin.
0- Posted on: Sat, 07/28/2012 - 11:26am #701254
kobyzParticipantHill is the most overated player in the league, he look good at the eye test but after that he is just not very effective cause he is so erratic, as a sSpurs fan i know Hill very well, i said from the start that Indiana are stupid for giving us Kawhi Leonard in exchange to Hill!
