lakesidebenParticipantAs far as I know Shaq still holds this combine record at 12 feet five inches. For those of you who are only old enough to know Shaq as a bumbling giant hawking butt-crack powder on tv, this is only one of the reasons he was the greatest prospect of my lifetime. Later Dwight Howard got an inch higher on a sports science show while a few years in the league. There was a rumor of a guy named James White getting near 13 feet. My question is, is there anyone in recent years who could break this record in their physical prime? It seems crazy that with all the athletes that have come through the NBA in the past 25 years this hasn’t been shattered. Anthony Davis and Durant come to mind. Maybe Embiid even with the injuries. Ayton has a 9’3” standing reach w some hops. Anyone alive right now who could hit 12’7?

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think Ayton could come close. Same with Bamba — he has a 9’6 standing reach. What about Robert Williams? Wouldn’t bet against him depending on his wing span/standing reach.

holefillers1ParticipantDJ Stephens

holefillers1ParticipantI read he recorded 12’5.5″ I am not sure if this is legit but he is only 6’5 in sneakers. Either way I always enjoy watching him dunk. If James White was allowed in the contest then why not this guy.

FritzParticipantThis is too funny, as I am literally typing Giannas, ESPN shows a highlights of him tonight against the Cavs catching the ball 12 ‘5 in the air with a call out saying thats how high it was. So I think I can officially throw him in the conversation. Other candidates were prime Deandre Jordan, Maybe Gobert although im not sure he has the bunnies with that length. I bet prime Javalle Mcgee is up there/

Memphis MadnessParticipantYep. DJ Stephens has to be up there. Best jumper/dunker I have ever seen — and I used to watch Michael Wilson for Memphis State, the guy who broke the dunk height record with the Harlem Globetrotters.

whiteflashParticipantSports Science is probably the least scientific show of all time, and there’s no way that Greek Freak touches 12’5. He’s crazy long, but actually pretty un-explosive. Don’t remember Howard’s standing reach, but he only posted a 35" off the run. I imagine someone like VC or Gerald Green in their primes could do some damage. James White is the closest I’ve ever seen to touching the top of the glass. There’s been a bunch of bullsh!+ stories about people being able to do it (like Howard said he could), but whenever challenged they always had lame excuses.

HitsterParticipantVinsanity sprang to mind as he must have got fairly high doing some of those dunks. A very tall player with a long wingspan would always have a high standing reach. I wonder what a tall high jumper could get to although apparently some of those guys couldn’t jump any higher vertically than other sportsmen.

The GoatParticipantAntonio McDyess? It was years ago but I thought his numbers were up there.

The GoatParticipantWilt had a 48" vertical? ! I’m not sure Google.. If so, I dare say he may have given Shaw a run for his money

whiteflashParticipantAnyone who legitimately believes that Wilt Chamberlain had ANYWHERE NEAR a 48" vert needs to have their heads 3xamined. That would put the top of his head above the square and would mean he could easily touch the top of the glass. I assure you he was nowhere near that, and his vert was probably closer to mid/high 20’s.

The GoatParticipantim just saying if you look for answers on the topic, many of them list Wilt as having a 48″ vert. I would liek to see the evidence. Incidentally, they also say Muggsy Bogues had a 43.5′, id like to see a pic or vid or that

whiteflashParticipantWasn’t trying to single you out, just saying that that’s pure nonsense. Wilt Chamberlain was a pathological liar and just said crazy sh!+ to make himself seem superhuman. Read a story once by Nate Thurmond where he talked about Chamberlain constantly lying. Bogues didn’t have a 43.5" or anywhere near it. There would be massive evidence of any of these claims, but there’s none.

GBeeParticipantAnybody remember Jeremy Evans? Not much of a player but he did have a 7’5+ winspan and a 43" vert at 6’9. I remember seeing footage of him touching 12’7.5"
0- Posted on: Tue, 03/20/2018 - 6:01pm #1113636
GBeeParticipantApparently he touched 12’9 in September ’14, breaking his own record of 12’8.5. They measured his standing reach at 9′ which seems a bit low for someone with his length, but if accurate that means he had a 45 inch vert at 6’9. Pretty ridiculous.

The GoatParticipantI read an article about Boris Diaw once, it said Amare Stoudemire had a particular combine vert record (not sure which one, may have been a local record for a particular facility or something). Apparently Diaw was wearing flip flops and beat it, no sweat. It was an interesting read, it was about how he is naturally talented but generally lazy lol

The GoatParticipantWhiteflash – I guess I read the original Marc Stein article and this is the excerpt from it https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/lookit/2014/6/15/5812532/presenting-the-most-boris-diaw-anecdote-imaginable

whiteflashParticipantHahaha, that’s an amusing story but I’d bet the keys to my truck that it’s completely made up.

Magic JordanParticipantdoing a running vert and touching the top of the backboard, or at least pretty close to it according to the vert stick.

whiteflashParticipantThat was the angle, and proven to be totally bogus.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantDidn’t one-time top prospect Ilimane Diop have some kind of absurd 8-foot wingspan? Did he ever jump in a combine-like setting?
