OhCanada-ParticipantWho’s the better prospect?
I’m high on both of these players. I’ll stick to my preseason prediction and go with VJ.
Tre Johnson has the size and length to become a real problem on the defensive end but he has shown sizes of settling into a scoring role. What he did in the SEC this year was amazing and I still dont think people are truly giving him enough credit for leading the conference in scoring. His Texas team was dysfunctional and had alot of player trying to get their own. Tre had a few “bad body language” moments which I personally would rather see in a player than not. Shows at least he’s competitive and cares.
VJ has proven he is a defensive playmaker and his jumpshot improved dramatically throughout the year His elite athletisism allows him to make plays that 99% of the league cannot make on both ends of the floor.. He was also played out of position more often than not at Baylor spending alot of time as the 3rd guard on the floor, or playing as a spot up shooter. VJ will look alot better on an NBA team in a league that prioritizes his strengths, creating turnovers and fastbreak oppurtunities. It will be insteresting to see if he immediately breaks out similar to a Donavan Mitchell or Keyontae George
Tre seems to be the player that will make the biggest impact during his rookie contract while VJ seems to be the player with the highest upside but also the higher risk

HitsterParticipantI agree that Tre could have a more immediate impact on the NBA but I still think VJ should be drafted ahead of him and has more long term upside.

NorrinRaddParticipantThe answer is Tre Johnson.
I suppose if it’s a perfect fit and you had a ton of scoring on your team already, VJ Edgecombe is a great defender with incredible athleticism… but if I want a playmaker that can be called upon to get me 25 points or even carry your team to victory – well it’s Tre Johnson. Johnson isn’t the best defender, but he’s good enough. He can dribble, pass and shoot well and is an absolute bucket. I can see a world where he could be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd option on a team but likely he’s a top 2 scorer on an NBA team. I really like both of these prospects and even have them in the same tier, but more often than not I’d pencil in Tre Johnson to go ahead of VJ. I do notice that a ton of mocks have it differently with VJ going as high as usually 3. Tre Johnson is usually in that 5-10 range. To me anything below 7 is a joke for either one. There’s a lot to like about both of these prospects but Tre Johnson would be my pick. Imo VJ doesn’t have more upside than Tre. I think they’re neck and neck there. They both to me are safe picks and have pretty high floors. I don’t think either is a bad choice here, whoever picks either of these guys gets a good situation.0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/18/2025 - 8:52pm #1267757
HitsterParticipantTre is rock solid 5th on my mock draft. If it was done on BPA and not positional I would probably still have him 5th but I could make a case for him possibly being 4th.
People have said Ace could go 2nd down to about 4th. Is there a case that Tre even goes 3rd with Ace 4th and VJ possibly 5th ?
VJ I just like more for Charlotte, NOP could take either VJ or Tre, Washington too, Philly again either or, Danny Ainge I feel might like VJ better. Houston would possibly prefer Tre for his scoring, Spurs and Miami I see being VJ guys, Portland would take either. Dallas I think VJ might be a better fit but Tre as an immediate impact guy would work better so they take him.
Who VJ, Ace, Tre and Dylan work out for it will be interesting to see. Ace and Dylan were teammates so I don’t see there being an issue with them working out together. But might either not want to work out with Tre or VJ. I see whoever loses the Copper sweepstakes pretty much looking at all 4 guys if they are picking between 2 and 4.

NorrinRaddParticipantit’s possible, only takes one team to like Tre 3rd best. I think though Tre isn’t as touted as Ace and they’re similar, so if a team was higher on Tre they might trade down a spot or 2 before they reach… VJ is a different animal though so many have him tied for 3rd overall. It’s weird, because of what Ace brings to the table he’s a top 3 ranked prospect still. It’s possible there’s a slight reach and someone gets picked ahead of him. But Dylan Harper being the point guard and not redundant to the other 3 prospects I don’t see dropping past 3rd overall. I like Ace as much, but he could go as low as 5th imo and as high as 2nd. Ace has the highest ceiling of the prospects mentioned… but all are so good that it could be a go get your guy scenario here. VJ has an easier path to getting picked ahead of Ace imo though because of position and what they bring to the table… if you don’t need an Ace, you likely don’t need a Tre. Team need matters a lot here. But if you are in the top 5, chances are you need a guy that can carry your team in a scoring pinch.
