Lotto StudParticipantDuring the All-Star break the TNT cast all were asked, when was their first dunk during a segment. This leads me to ask you all on the forum about your first flight.
Who or what motivated you to dunk? – My best friend motivated me to dunk at the time because he was the first teen I had seen under 6’0” to dunk at the age of 14 in middle school. Also Ray Young from UCLA fueled my drive even more when I read in an old Slam mag I had that he would do 1,000 calf raises a night.
How old were you? – I was 16 yrs old
How tall were you? – I was 5’7”-5’8”
Estimated Vert? – If I had to guess I would say probably anywhere from 30-34 inches
Where were you when you dunked? – I was at open gym that was held at my HS that took place after school during the spring.
What type of dunk did you do? – I could never palm a ball nor could I jump off one foot so I did a two hand dunk off two feet.
What was your reaction? – My initial reaction was that I can’t let them see me smile, I have to act like I’ve been doing it for a while.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – “Do it again!”…….Second time I did it I cocked the ball back because I realized I got up high on my first dunk…..The guys in the gym were amped because they would have never expected me to get up because I was so short

Sewok15ParticipantI was 17 and I was in Florida for a tournament over Xmas break. We were walking around the parks all day and had a game at the Wide World of Sports complex in the evening. My legs were loose as could be and in warmups I had my first ever throw down. I was 5″11′ and have big hands so I could always palm the ball easily. My max vertical was 36 inches back in the day…9 years later it is probably about 24 inches.
My team went 0-3 in the tourney and we actually lost a game by one in which one of my teammates missed a dunk. We still had a blast though because there were hundreds of high school cheerleaders staying at our hotel complex for the half time show of the Capital One Bowl….I would give anything to go back to those days.

Sewok15ParticipantI didn’t add my reaction because I didn’t really have one…I was pretty stunned. My teammates were even more stunned because these were the kids I was playing with for years. We had some kids who could dunk but I was never one of them and then when I did they were just like “did he just dunk?”
I never got one in a game and we were up 30 one night and I made a steal and was flying down the sideline thinking about the dunk and I dribbled it off my foot. I also missed one in a summer league game and that was pretty much the end of my in game dunking….my coach didn’t enjoy it as much as I did.

JoeWolf1Who or what motivated you to dunk? – I could always jump pretty well being a basketball fan, I loved dunks. Shawn Kemp was a guy I would always emulate on low goals, I freaking loved the dunk.
How old were you? – 15
How tall were you? – About 6′ in shoes
Estimated Vert? – Not sure, I high jumped 6′ that spring in track. I’ve always been a 1 footed jumper, so off one foot with a few steps probably 35”
Where were you when you dunked? – After basketball practice, so I was already pretty spend, but I got a great jump and threw it down.
What type of dunk did you do? – I couldn’t palm it either so I got my first as a 1 hander off the bounce.
What was your reaction? – I flipped out like I fucking won the NBA title. My coaches were really cool about it, they came over and gave me high fives.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – Everyone was pumped, I had been so close for a couple weeks leading up, height wasn’ the problem, but since I couldn’t palm it I was back ironing them. I’m 30, and still remember it very well, a very fond memory.

BasketBalAllanParticipantHow old were you? – I was 2 yrs old
How tall were you? – I was 2’8”
Estimated Vert? – If I had to guess I would say probably anywhere from 1-4 inches
Where were you when you dunked? – I was sitting at a table in my kitchen in my lime green high chair.
What type of dunk did you do? – I just kind of did a one handed half grip on the cookie and went straight down into the glass, I call it the classic.
What was your reaction? – My initial reaction was that I can’t let them see me smile, I have to act like I’ve been doing it for a while, but then I turned my head away from them and giggled as I ate.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – “Do it again!”…….Little did I know that when I turned my head to finish the cookie off they stole the rest of them right from under my nose.

In terms of myself… I’ve never been able to dunk and I’m 6’3 and 22 years old.

sheltwon3ParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? Tons of people and just myself I have been so close to dunking since my freshmen year in high school but close was not enough
How old were you? – I was 15 16 years old
How tall were you? – I was 5’8” 5’8.5″
Estimated Vert? – 35- 37 inches( I have actually dunk the ball off the back of the rim before best missed dunk ever)
Where were you when you dunked? – school gym Midland High in Texas
What type of dunk did you do? – One handed(trying to lose a lot of weight now so I can dunk 2 handed at over 30)
What was your reaction? -I put my hands up like YeahWhat was the reaction of others who seen you? – they were hyped but some people hated. My missed dunk was actually more impressive because I may have gotten my head closer to the rim on that one. That was not my intention and I was so focused on that I missed the dunk that I never thought about how high I got accept I saw other people faces as they looked shocked. I then remembered looking and feeling like I was really close to the back rim. I actually tried to dunk in on the way down because I could jump but had no clue how to dunk.

BenchWarmerParticipant18 years old and currently 5’5 with a 38 inch vertical with one (and a half) steps off two feet and still trying, I am quite fast and can jump really high but I can’t figure out how to run into my jump if you know what I mean. I know its a stretch for me to ever dunk (damn near impossible cause my height)
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 11:52am #750074
Chilbert arenasParticipantI was 16, open gym before the season began, I had never played organized ball before and the head coach was watching us warm up. I was feeling it. Jumped off my left foot dunked one handed (right hand) so clean and even brough the rim down a little on the way down. I was trying to hold my smile back but couldn’t help it. Also note that I’m a 6’ft white guy. And NBA 6ft tall not really 6 ft tall.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 12:03pm #750080
TyroberParticipantI’v always compared myself to Steve Nash with defense. I’m 5’10. You know how they say white men can’t jump? That is 100% true when it comes to me. Can’t jump to save my life, but I can play defense, shoot, and pass with the best of them.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 12:05pm #750079
ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI was around 15 years old, just a month or two shy of 16. Probably about 6-1 or 6-2. Dunked with a running start at the gym me and my buddies played pick up ball in, not in an actual game just fooling around with the guys. Got my first dunk in a game next season when I was 16 and probably close to 6-4.

Pistol Pete. The PelicanParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? No one motivated me to dunk, because I never thought I could truly do it. Could get up to the rim by junior year but couldn’t dunk on a regulation goal.
How old were you? – I was 17
How tall were you? – I was 5’6-5’7″
Estimated Vert? – 39 inches before I tore my acl my senior year of track doing the long jump
Where were you when you dunked? – Bethany Christian school gym, Baker Louisiana, it was during warmups
What type of dunk did you do? – It was just a one handed, barely over the rim dunk.
What was your reaction? – I was amped already for the first game of district, so I just kept being my hyper self, acted like it was normal lolWhat was the reaction of others who seen you? – My teammates, the cheerleaders and fans were so hyped, the crowd went wild, but my coach got pissed and made me do 150 squat thrust right after the game because in LHSAA basketball, dunking in warmups results as a technical if the refs wants to give it. But at the end of the season he laughed about it and gave me props because i was his first player who he believed couldn’t dunk who did.
That remains my first and only time dunking. I think my adrenaline just gave me the extra boost. I always performed better on big stages, and I think it just happened. Didn’t even think I was going to dunk, I just saw I was so high and I tried it.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 12:18pm #750083
HaleParticipantHow old were you? – 20
How tall were you? – 5’9
Estimated Vert? – Whatever it would have to be for me to dunk
Where were you when you dunked? – My school’s rec center
What type of dunk did you do? – A normal one handed dunk coming from the baseline
What was your reaction? – I always try to dunk after shooting around and when I got it I just really surprised myself
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – The closest person to me was at least on the next court over and I’m not sure if they saw me do it or not
Disclaimer: This was also the last time I dunked a ball.

LindseyParticipant16 in layup lines before this club tournament. took a while to get the first one down, but i started gaining vert pretty quick. bounce windmills are now pretty regular and i can almost head butt the rim now at 6-1ish.

Sewok15ParticipantI was one of the rare under 6 foot white guys who could dunk. In my prime I could only make 1 out of every 3rd or 4th attempt but I could still dunk. Dunking is however a very small part of basketball. I averaged about 7 points a game starting 3 years at a relatively small high school. I was a good role player but not exactly the type of player colleges look at.
I don’t doubt that there could be some people lying but dunking doesn’t really have a lot to do with being a good player. I know guys who could do 360’s and all kinds of crazy stuff but when you put them in the game with defense they didn’t know how to score.
As for video proof unfortunately I don’t have any. I could only dunk for about two years and never thought to record it. After high school and a couple years of working at an Italian restaurant (and drinking heavily) I put on 30 pounds and can hardly slap the backboard on a layup at this point. I need to get back into shape….but I am pretty confident my dunking days are long gone.

JoeWolf1Not everyone feels the need to lie, I’m sure many of these are truthful, like mine. Obviously I’m not going to have a video camera taping me after a random practice my Sophomore year, but here is video of me a couple weeks before my 30th birthday, close to a decade past my leaping prime (20-23) and 15 years after my first dunk.

0- Posted on: Sat, 02/23/2013 - 11:08am #750239
JoeWolf1Thanks man, Ive lost some explosion jumping off one foot, but I bet my one rep standing vert is probably 31″, maybe 34 or so with a few steps. Bad thing about getting old is that I have to warm up to do that. I miss the days of stepping on the court cold and being able to get up, haha.

Professor RozayParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? I was watching the older kids in my hood dunking and I was just telling my boys I’m going to be dunking like them.
I was 15 years old
I was 5’9″
I’m not sure what my vertical was
When I dunked I was in my favorite park growing up in the Lower East Side called Tompkins Square Park. This park is in Manhattan, New York.
I jumped off one foot and did a two hand dunk
When I got down I just looked up at the rim and realized that I just did something on the basketball court that I always wanted to do. I’m not going to lie that dunk boosted my confidence as a player. I actually started on my prep school varsity team that upcoming school year. I was going to be a junior that year.
I was with this Jamaican guy that I always saw dunking in the park. He was actually giving me tips so I could actually dunk the ball. After I did it he gave me a five and we both just laughed. That was a good day.

ChrispyParticipantin high school, 17 years old. I always knew I could get up high enough, but I have tiny hands. I’m 6’1″ and can’t palm the ball at all. Caught it on tip dunk off a missed breakaway layup. Don’t know what vert was then, probably 30-32ish. I tried to play it cool, like I”I do this all the time, what’s the big deal?” Haha. I can only miss dunks now!
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 2:19pm #750121
ChrispyParticipantWhere were you when you first got dunked ON? What happened, how old, what was crowd/your reaction?
Me, I was 15. I stepped in to take a charge way too close to the hoop and I got banged on with 2 hands by a 6’5 guy…in front of my girlfriend and her parents…Ouch. Crowd, of course, started dogging me the rest of the game, and my teammates for the rest of the year.0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 2:38pm #750122
cuseflynn10ParticipantDuring the All-Star break the TNT cast all were asked, when was their first dunk during a segment. This leads me to ask you all on the forum about your first flight.
Who or what motivated you to dunk? – Basketball isn’t my favorite sport to play (I’m much better at baseball), so even though I wanted to dunk, I was really motivated by anything in particular.
How old were you? – I was 16 yrs old
How tall were you? – I was 5’10
Estimated Vert? – My vertical without a running start was around 20 inches so idk how high with the running stat. But my arms are super long. Probably had about a 6’2 wingspan or longer at the time.
Where were you when you dunked? – Local YMCA
What type of dunk did you do? – One hand slam
What was your reaction? – I was so pumped but I wasn’t with anyone I knew at the time so I didn’t have any witnesses to back my story. I made sure to bring witnesses the next time haha.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – Just me alone in the gym.No one saw it.

frogmanParticipantObviously this forum is full of super athletes. 5 foot 9, 15 year old kids throwing it down?
I was the only person at my whole school that could dunk when I was 17 and 6 foot 1. No idea what my vert was but I was the most athletic person at my school and won all the high and long jumps at the school and I could probably dunk 1/2 the time I attempted it. Would like to see some videos of these small kids dunking.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 4:45pm #750137
eric palmerParticipantI was always more of a shooter when I played, and never really bothered myself with getting that much of a vertical leap. I would spend almost all of my workout time going for lateral quickness and speed instead off a vertical. Now that I’m done with competitive basketball though, I’m working on trying to be able to actually dunk. Able to just get my fingers to the rim at 5’10”, but hopefully in a year or so I’ll be able to throw down.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 4:48pm #750138
FastAndFuriousParticipantI was 14 years old about to enter high school
I was 5’11
Estimated vert- maybe around 35 inches but my wingspan had to be about 6’7 then(It’s 6’9 now and i’m 6’1)
Where were you when you dunked- The local recreation center playing a game up to 150 with my friends working on our game before our 9th grade year.
What type of dunk did you do- A one hand slam off one foot.
What was your reaction- My reaction was pretty much basic, I smiled a little bit.
What was others reaction when they seen it- I would never forget it, I was one of the top 8th graders in the state, I had all the Highschool coaches on my head and my 2 cousins who was just watching their “proteges” playing went crazy when I dunked, now mind you one of my cousins played at Kent State at the time and is overseas now the other one played at Michigan State and ended up in the NBA, but they went crazy, like you going to the league, you the coldest 8th grader, etc lol I wasnt even that hype.

BuckeyeGuyParticipantI was 18, freshman in college on a football scholarship. Had lifted hard for the first time all summer long. There was a school meeting (small NAIA school) in the gym first day everyone moved in. Since we had been there for 2 weeks the football team went to screw around. We found a basketball and the rims were down and a few guys started throwing down some weak things. I could always touch the rim but never snap it. So i just ran in and snapped it two handed pretty good. As the whole school was pretty much there I threw myself an oop off the floor and two handed it home pretty good to a nice ovation. I’m 5’9 in shoes so pretty big deal and pretty sweet feeling
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 7:15pm #750153
MalcolmxParticipantMotivation was just people in my hood having bunnies.
I was 13. Finishing 8th grade and a month away from 14.(I have a summer birthday)
Graduating middle school I was 5’9. I could palm a ball since I was about 12 so hands were not an issue
Was at my neighborhood park on 230th street and broadway in the Bronx, New York
It was a regular 1 hand one foot rub in kind of dunk. My reaction was just like “finally.” because I had a friend who started getting up near the rim in 6th grade and had threw it down in the summer going into seventh so for me to at least get a rub in was a good accomplishment to just be going into 9th grade. Everyone in the park was saying I would be windmilling by the time I get to 16. My dum ass got lazy and started doing things I shouldn’t have been doing so that windmill never came.

aamir543ParticipantI haven’t dunked yet, but I’m working on my hops and my game, and my dream scenario would be at our school’s open gyms in the summer, I’d be 16, running the break and dunking over the 6’2 kid who sucks balls(He’s the tallest guy on our JV or Vars, and I go to a school 2,700 kids)
0 - Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 7:58pm #750161
Lebron’s HairlineParticipantWait you go to a school of 2700 kids but your tallest guy is 6’2? My school is 600 kids but we have 2 6’7 sophmore twins, a 6’9 sophmore, a 6’4 sophmore, 2 6’2 sophmore guards, and two twin 6’3 freshman guards.
0- Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 8:06pm #750163
aamir543ParticipantNo, the tallest guy isn’t 6’2, but the tallest basketball player is. There’s this one guy who’s 6’6 but he plays baseball. Other than that you’ll find about half a dozen 6’2 guys, maybe one or two you can say are 6’3, but no one else taller than that. Now that I think of it our school is pretty short, and not diverse at all, it’s almost 70% Asian.
0
- Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 8:12pm #750165
Lebron’s HairlineParticipantOh ok, I live in the south so the school is pretty much 50% white, 40% black, 8% mexican. I was in the 2% of mixed with everything. Pretty much everyone plays every sport year round so there’s no shortage of height on any team like your school
0- Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 8:34pm #750170
aamir543ParticipantInteresting, at my school specifically it’s probably 65% asian(including Filipinos) 25% white, about 7% latino, and 3% black. But I think our school is an outlier, it’s the only school in the district that has specific test score and grade requirements, but the other schools are rather diverse, and were really fortunate that there aren’t any violence problems at our schools, in fact, the damn security guards are so bored, they say there are too many people in the library and make people line up out side or pester us about petty shiit just to pass the time, lol.
And our school is also 60% female so you know it’s all good, lol.
0- Posted on: Fri, 02/22/2013 - 8:54pm #750172
Lebron’s HairlineParticipantHaha your school sounds like my old school in Hawaii. I can dig the 60% females.

IndianaBasketballParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? – I just always wanted to. First it was being able to smack the pad, then touch rim and then dunk.
How old were you? – I was 15 and a freshman in high school
How tall were you? – I was about 5′ 9″
Estimated Vert? – I’m not sure.
Where were you when you dunked? – I was at this recreation center in Indpls called the JCC (Jewish Community Center)
What type of dunk did you do? – I jumped off of one foot (left foot) and dunked with one hand. I was short, but had big enough hands to palm the ball. I didn’t dribble though… Just ran with it.
What was your reaction? – I felt pretty damn good and was just trying not to smile lol. Felt real good though. I felt accomplished. That gave me a lot of confidence.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – I was with one of my best friends at the time and our freshman coach, and they both were just really happy for me and hyped up.

the I in winParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? – I was playing a pick up game and play had died down a lot, we were very close to going home. I got a passing lane steal and just kidding around I cocked the ball way back and slammed it hard expecting it to hit the front of the rim and go flying but instead I dunked the hell out of it.
How old were you? – I was 16 yrs old
How tall were you? – I was 6’1″ maybe, a little shorter than I am now (6’4″)
Estimated Vert? – Not sure but fairly good, 28-30 at the time and then I started training specifically for dunking and got it up to about 35.
Where were you when you dunked? – West Forsyth YMCA, same gym Chris Paul cried his way through as a kid.
What type of dunk did you do? – I would say it was a tomahawk.
What was your reaction? – I went bat shit crazy as did the other 10ish people in the gym, I did the Vince Carter “it’s over” thing and then we all actually got ready and left the gym.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – I hadn’t been trying to dunk much up to that point so people were shocked but mostly hyped. My brother was their and he just kept on yelling “about time”.
By far my favorite personal basketball moment.

GronounoursParticipantI’m amazed too, Nbadraft.net is full of high flyers. I’ve never played at even a decent level, but I was still a good jumper and at 5’11, I’ve never been able to dunk. I could probably have with an appropriate training, because one inch more would have been enough, but the only dunks I’ve ever made were in my dreams (I mean it, I’ve dreamed of it).
Dunking at 5’7-5’9 when you’re 16 is kind of exceptional.

pohani komaracParticipantI’m 6’0 maybe now 6’1 without shoes (my last mesure was with 19 when I served army and I was still growing), never mesured vertical….(nothing to mesure). My first dunk was probabley 16-17 when I reched 5’10,5’11. still can dunk, but nothing special and only when I get in shape during summer.
but i can proudly say I outplayed this guy when we sreved army :)….he can only dunk

GronounoursParticipantIt’s a funny thread. You could start a similar one about “when was the first time you made love?”
“Oh I was 13, my *** was about 8 inches long. I couldn’t believe it, I started jumping around the room like crazy; everyone was shouting and applauding.”
“Personally, I never managed to, because of an elevation problem. I used to be able to touch the rim, though. I think there’s more to love than just throwing it down.”

MalcolmxParticipantYou don’t have to be a freak to throw it down at 13 14 or 15 even if your under 6 foot. Lets say your 14 and your 5’10, If you have an average reach with nice size hands then your standing reach will probably be 7’10 or something close to it. If your wingspan is long then you may have an eight foot standing reach. But I’ll stick with the 7’10 one. Now to touch the rim you only need 26 inches off the floor so if you dunk it your around 29 or 30 inches. No one ever said they did reverse double pump dunks. We are talking basic dunks. Jumping 30 inches is a nice vert at a young age but if you look around right now there are many young kids with 30 inch verts. Now a freak on the other hand would be at the 36 mark or better. But dunking at under 6 feet at a young age is very believable if you ask me.

joecheck88ParticipantI was 17 I was and am 5’7″ about 155lbs. It was in the basketball gym at HS. I was playing basketball for the school. So I was in good shape. If I had to estimate my running jump off one foot it was probably about 38. My standing reach is at max 7’5. I had been trying to dunk the whole season. Everyone was dunking after practice. I had a guy toss me a ball right in front of the rim because I couldn’t palm the ball. It wasn’t a clean dunk as it rattled in the rim a few times but never popped out and went through. Now I can grab the rim on a good day as I’m 190 pounds and not been playing as much. Haha.

Bad DogParticipantThis brings me back. I was 12 the first time I dunked (two months shy of turning 13). It was 17 years ago. It was in a pick up game with some of my school mates at this alternate school I went to briefly (we had all been kicked out of public school). I was about 5’7 at the time and it was a one handed dunk. The dunk was a result from a steal I had made just moments earlier. No one seemed too impressed by it. Our games were pretty rough (prison rules). One of the guys I usually teamed with did give some props though. He was a real high flyer too. For the most part dunking was frowned on. A lot of times once your feet left the ground, you may not have ended up landing on them because someone would’ve pushed you into the wall.
This was the first and last time I dunked. Less than two months later I was hit by a car. The accident could have been worse considering the speed the car was traveling (40 mph), but luckily I was able to walk away (literally walk). The accident did mess up my knees and back some. A couple years later I did get back into athletics (Tae Kwon Do) and I trained for 3 years under 2 grandmasters and 3 masters. But again, my body quit on me during year three. I did try dunking a few years ago. I hit the backboard but sprained my ankle on the landing. Since then I haven’t tried dunking or jumping.

Malik-UniversalParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk?– People used to ask me if I can dunk and I said no… so eventually I got more motivated to try and dunk.. at least I was being honest lol
How old were you? I was 18 in the summer that I dunked for the first time which was in July or August… now im 20
How tall were you? 6’2”… ive been 6’2” since I was 15
Estimated Vert? 26-28 inches… basically tony parker hops lol
Where were you when you dunked?– Well my first “dunk” was at this playground… but it wasn’t a full ten… it was around an inch off… but I later dunked at Lifetime a day before my first day of college
What type of dunk did you do?– I came from the three point line took some dribbles… went up with one hand… and had me a dunk
What was your reaction?– I wasn’t excited at all…I was just having fun.. I felt good going up so I expected to dunk the ball…
What was the reaction of others who seen you?– My best friend was with me and we were running 5’s with some others… but no one was really shocked or excited… it was a basic dunk that 99.99% of nba players can do

Nate505ParticipantWho or what motivated you to dunk? – I don’t even get why this is a question. If you like to play basketball it seems like something you’d want to do.
How old were you? – 13 or 14
How tall were you? – 5’6″ or 5’7″
Estimated Vert? – Can’t be that high. Maybe a couple feet.
Where were you when you dunked? – Longfellow Elementary School
What type of dunk did you do? – Two handed, so I could lift myself up and scream like a moron.
What was your reaction? – Felt good, like I was an NBA type player.
What was the reaction of others who seen you? – Think my friend said nice and dunked on me next.
Oh, did I mention it was an 8 foot high rim.
