Hubbs dazzles, Choctaws roll past Tigers

If you're a basketball fan you always want to see your team win, but fans of the game also come out to see spectacular players play the game.

On Friday evening, Dyer County senior Robert Hubbs provided some wonderful basketball candy that left even the Hardin County fans cheering for him. Hubbs wowed and dazzled the crowd with a few dunks and a game-high 29-point performance to lead his Choctaws past the Tigers 61-50 to improve to 9-1 on the year and 3-0 in district play.

"Hubbs was nothing short of phenomenal tonight," said Dyer County head coach Derek McCord.

Hubbs' numbers included two baskets from downtown range, seven rebounds, one assist and four blocked shots. He was perfect from the charity line, capitalizing on three opportunities and shot 60 percent from the field. The Choctaws needed a dominant performance from Hubbs as the Tigers, who came into Friday's contest undefeated, battled Dyer County hard the whole game after falling behind early. Hardin County was able to contain Hubbs in the first half holding him to only eight points, but the Choctaws still took a 29-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

They could only contain him for so long.

Hubbs came out after the halftime break and simply dominated with a 15-point performance in the period. He also received strong support from senior PJ Miller, who seemed to finally get going on Friday after a slow start to the season. McCord says he was pleased with how well Miller got to the rack and gave a solid effort with seven points, five rebounds and one assist. Senior LaMarcus Mosley and junior Malik Pugh also chipped in with seven points apiece. For the once-undefeated Tigers, McCord had nothing but high praise.

"Coach (Brian) Brown does a great job with his team and they are always very well coached and will never quit," said McCord. "This win caps a really tough part of our schedule and now both our teams can get some well-deserved rest."
