Romeo Weems is beginning to make big waves in the basketball recruiting world and he is only going to be a sophomore. On Friday this week, Weems will take an unofficial visit to Michigan, capping an exciting week for the New Haven star.
On Monday this week, Weems got his first Division I offer from the University of Detroit Mercy. Thursday, he got his second offer from Oakland University. Both offers are expected to be the start of many more to come for the rising talent. The 6-foot-6 all-round player already has a five-star rating from ESPN, where he is ranked 13th in the nation for the 2019 class.
Despite being a rising basketball star in the prep ranks, Weems admits he does not watch college basketball so many of his future visits could coincide with his first real exposure to college basketball.
Having just turned 15 in June, Weems has already played multiple positions on the floor for New Haven. As a freshman, he put up some impressive averages that included 16.1 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals per game.
"At the wing, I feel like I can excel more," Weems said. "I have the ball in my hands more than if I was at the post. You can move more ... You get on the wing, you can drive, attack, kick it or get the layup. I don't think too many people can stay in front of me."
Along with Michigan, Weems has also gotten interest from Michigan State, Oakland, Ohio State and Xavier.
"He's a very, very humble kid," Hew Haven coach Tedaro France told MLive over the summer. "You ask him if he's good and he'll say no, that he's got to keep working. You can tell by how much time he continues to put in at the gym. For me, to see a kid get that much attention now, he's very, very humble. His parents do a great job of keeping him grounded. He's just a kid that doesn't just care about himself."
