Lansing Everett 75, Muskegon 52: Manuel, Vikings end run by defending champions in state quarterfinals

LANSING, MI – Muskegon came in as the defending Class A state champion and newly crowned Mr. Basketball Deyonta Davis.

But it was Lansing Everett that came away with the top prize Tuesday night with a surprising 75-52 win against the Big Reds in the Class A state quarterfinals before a packed house of about 4,000 at Lansing Eastern.

Everett senior Trevor Manuel, who came in third in the Mr. Basketball voting, scored a game-high 24 points as the Vikings pulled away in the second half. Manuel hit 10-of-15 shots, had eight rebounds and two blocks.

Leading 26-24 at halftime, Everett started the second half with an 8-0 run and outscored Muskegon 22-9 in the quarter to take control.

Everett (24-2) also got 20 points from Jamyrin Jackson and Everett turned in a strong defensive effort to earn a spot in the state semifinals against Saginaw Arthur Hill at 1 p.m. Friday at the Breslin Center.

Muskegon ends the season 23-2.

Senior forward Joeviair Kennedy led Muskegon with 20 points and Davis finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.
