Flameres15ParticipantI was going through the recent NBA Drafts, and I realized that if the 76ers took the player with the highest risk-reward scenario, they could have had this:
2013- Giannis Antetokounmpo, Dennis Schroder
2014- Aaron Gordon, Zach LaVine
2015- Kristaps Porzingis
Now I know there are many holes in that team, but I thought we could discuss risk-reward vs. best player available.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantActually I thought they did take the player with the highest risk reward in 2014 in embiid. The jury’s still out on that one though.

Yep I would also say that Exum was more high risk/high reward than Gordon. And Saric is also the high risk/high reward type, it’s going to be interesting to see what he’s capable of when he gets to the NBA.

BogDon_KryptParticipantThat’s so weird I was going through the 1984 draft and realized if philly had the 1st and 3rd pick, they could have had olajuwan and Michael Jordan. Can you imagine?!?! Then they could trade both guys for future picks!

dazeoneParticipant2013 For the Sixers Noel and MCW were the best 2 picks. Noel was supposed to go first and MCW was supposed to be a 6’6 Rondo.
2014 Had to take the chance on Emblid and Saric. Emblid would have gone 1st if healthy and Saric was a better McDermott if he would have played in college, he would have went higher. He is a 6’10 forward that is tough, has a handle, and a jumpshot.
2015 KAT was gone…Lakers took DRuss..thank God..and Okafor fell in their lap …they had to take the sure thing which he was …Porzingus may eventually be better tha KAT and right now does more than Okfor but you can’t blame them for taking him ..plus the Philly fanbase would have ate Hinkie alive if they took Porzingus and he was a bust with Okafor on the board because at one point he was #1 until KAT rose up..

circumlocution75ParticipantPhila had No 1st round pick in 2015 & 2017 when Hinkie took over…..
the 2015 pick was traded to Boston for Arnotte Moultry (by Doug Collins) around the same time as the Bynum trade / disaster….. It was top 10 protected & it would transfer to a 2016 2nd round pick if not transferred….
So by taking Dario Saric & Joel Embiid – both of whom it was known would miss the entire 2014 Season (for different reasons)….. Hinkie ensured that Phila would get that 2015 which turned into Jahlil Okafor….
Also, if you remember right before Phila was about to use that New Orleans #10 overall pick in the 2014 Draft…… the Extra pick they got when they traded Jru Holiday to New Orleans for their 2013 #6 (Noel) & 2014 # 10 (Saric) picks……… PG Elfin Payton was still on the board & Orlando had Payton targeted for their #12 overall pick…..
Hinkie floated a rumor that Phila was trading MCW……. & were going to draft Payton w/ that #10 pick…… Orlando panicked & bit on the Poker bluff…. They called Hinkie & offered to Give Back the 2017 1st round pick that Collins had traded away as part of the Bynum deal…..
So it’s not all black & white….. also, if you ask the same question this time next year after 6’10” Point PF Saric & 7’2” C Embiid are both more than half way thru their Rookie seasons in the NBA…… I realize it’s a big "if" with Embiid….. but this kid is supposedly looking great after Durant’s surgeon did that bone graft…..
In any case, I agree Porzingus would have looked Great next to Embiid for Phila….. but Okafor is a stud & even if they trade him they will fetch quite a package…. same w/ Noel….. these are valuable assets & don’t forget they do have 8 first round picks over the next 3 drafts……
So at some point they Have to start getting better??? right??? lol…..

TeslaBallerParticipantIf Philly drafted Gordon and Lavine in 2014, we would have missed out on the greatest NBA dunk contest ever! (Pre game lay up lines would be must watch TV)
Like Dazzling Dunks said in 2014 Embiid was the best prospect. A whole lot of NBA people were throwing around the name Olajuwon when talking about Embiid. Much like LeBron and Simmons early this season.

VRod305ParticipantI’m tired of all the people that rip Hinkie especially the national media morons like Zach Lowe, Stephen A and Howard Eskin.
Look at what we had when Hinkie took over with Thad, Spencer and ET. We had a 30-win team that was going nowhere. I do not want to win 30 games every year and pick eighth and be lucky to get a role player.
We had to trade those guys and we got every good deals for all of them. Hinkie gets a top-10 pick for MCW either this year or next year. I bet if you found out what the Bucks were offered for him just a year later it was nowhere close to that.
We had to take Embiid. Look at all those guys that went after him. Dante Exum has played one year and he sucked. He averaged four points a game and can’t shoot. Aaron Gordon averaged five points a game last year and only played 17 mins per game. He hasn’t started playing more til recently. He has a lot of developing to do. Marcus Smart isn’t any good either.
Then look at the "sure thing" Jabari Parker that was going to average 20 a game immediately. He still has no postion, he still sucks and the Bucks are already trying to trade him a year and a half in. You could have told me draft night Embiid was missing two years and I’d take him right now. He’s so much better than all those guys.
This is how we have to do things. We are going to be really good in a few years. I hope when we win the title in 2019 or 2020 that Hinkie puts all these morons that have ripped him for years on the first float.
We could be the Lakers and have two solid players in Clarkson and Randle and possibly no pick, no superstars or potential superstars. We could be the Nets with two solid players and nothing else. We could be the Bucks with a few nice players, but no stars.
I like where we are compared to most teams in the NBA outside of Golden State.

Hype MachineDante Exum sucked? The 76ers had no choice but to draft Embiid? Garbage.
How many people commenting on the Jazz are regularly watching them play? Ive heard some really dumb things concerning them lately so I’m going to stick up for my team.
Exum was the first PG ever to go prep-to-pro and he beat Trey Burke out for the starting PG position. After he was inserted into the starting lineup… the Jazz record improved dramatically. He is an exceptional defender and is the reason why the Jazz didn’t bother getting another PG…they already have their guy. Ty Lawson….please. when was the last time the Jazz ever traded for someone elses problem. Theyd rather lose than acquire a problem child.
Saying the 76ers had to take Embiid isn’t true. They CHOSE him. Nobody was holding a gun to their head to take a seriously injured bigman.

VRod305ParticipantHe averaged 4 points a game. I have yet to see a good NBA player that averages four points a game. This isn’t the Adriatic League.

ZachAttackParticipantYou seem to have forgotten he was 19 last year. Hadn’t had an OUNCE of USA experience before then. I know that it was Summer League, but he looked really good then. He has sooo much potential and it’s actually really sad that you can’t see it. It’s not all about the points VRod… I’m 15 and I know that. It’s more about the wins, which is what Dante gave the Jazz last year.

HitsterParticipantVery good point by Circum75 above about how Hinkie got the picks back, otherwise Philly would have been in a possible Boston situation going forward.
If Philly had got a top 2 pick in 2014, no doubt they would have taken Parker or Wiggins but ending up 3rd almost forced them to take a punt on Embliid as there was seen as a drop off from Embiid to next guys down.
Last year with KAT going top and Lakers taking Russell then Hinkie had to decide detween Porz and Okafor. One was a safer pick, the other more upside, Hinkie went safer especially as there are still issues over Embliid’s return.
