25 - Derik Queen

Strengths: Queen, at 6’10 possesses a combination of size and speed that will allow him to immediately compete with players at the next level physically … Crashes the glass hard (averaged 9.2 rebounds for the Terrapins, second in the Big Ten in rebounds per game), knows how to use his body to out maneuver opponents down low or can simply overwhelm them … Isn’t reliant on the pieces around him to get the ball in his hands, can be proactive with both calling for the ball and moving off the ball for more opportunities … Queen can generate offense beyond the post, has the handle and agility to work his way from half court to the paint … Extremely light on his feet for his size, possesses lateral quickness that is rare for a player of his size, leading to him becoming one of the most impactful defensive players in his class (averaged 1.1 blocks and 1.1 steals this year) … Has the potential to be one of the best 1-5 defenders at the next level, extremely capable as a switch/help defender … When dialed in, Queen has an all-world motor, can be relentless and will continue to hunt for the shot that is best for him … Is one of the best playmaking bigs in his class (averaged just under two assists per game this year), is comfortable creating out of the post and doesn’t always fully commit to scoring when driving to the rim … Shows the potential to develop into a capable floor spacer (had two games shooting over 40% from deep despite limited attempts), already has a solid mid range jumper and soft touch at the rim … A player with a lot of determination and focus …
Weaknesses: Queen, as it stands, isn’t a player capable of anchoring a pro level defense, let alone a college one … Finds the most success as a roamer/switcher who can match up to anyone with his size and speed but lacks true on ball defensive skills to lock down the paint … Is an offensive minded player first but without the ability to space the floor every night, will need to become adept at always playing on both sides of the ball … Dominant offensively, but struggles with offensive consistency (scored in single digits five out of eight straight games in January … As of now, isn’t capable of spreading the floor and will be reliant on scoring with 14 feet of the basket… A physical post player who plays bigger than he is, could lead to some problems as he has to adapt to always playing against someone taller than him … Has a negative assist to turnover ratio, well above average passer for his position with a great feel for the game but will need to cut down on mistakes to make the best use of his playmaking abilities … An streaky shot blocker, has nights where he can dominate the paint but others where he’ll finish with no blocks and had a minimal interior presence … Will need to be paired with a team that already has a solidified defensive system for him to show his full value on that end of the ball …
Overall: Queen was a member of the 2023 Montverde Academy squad, potentially the best high school team in history … He was a highly coveted prospect who received offers from elite programs like Kansas, LSU and Houston… However, choosing to join the Terrapins has clearly worked out for him as he has skyrocketed up big boards all year long and already made a name for himself as one of the best big men in the nation … Aside from some of his glaring weaknesses, it isn’t hard to tell that Queen has a natural level of talent that far exceeds that of most players… His footwork in the both high and low post and his ability to create for himself despite his size and frame will have scouts ready to jump at the chance to get such a polished interior threat … He had numerous big performances this season (20-20 game in his debut against Manhattan, career high 31 points against Michigan in the final game of the season) and has shown that his ceiling is astronomically high… The concerns about Queen as a defensive anchor in the paint as well as his lack of ability to space the floor are valid… But he has shown flashes in both of those categories and has both the intangibles and natural talent to develop his skills to point of becoming at least serviceable at both… The thought of a post-oriented center in 2025 has almost become a thing of the past, but if that’s not what draws you in, look at his ability to pass, switch on to all five positions and rebound with the best of them that have made Queen a household name over the past few months …
Notes: Native of Baltimore, Maryland … Played for National Champion Montverde Academy, who finished with a 33-0 record and won the Chipotle Nationals in 2024 … MVP of the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game with 23 points (10-15 FG), 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals … Scored 20 points in the 2024 Jordan Brand Classic …

Strengths: 6’10 mobile big man … Good length … Very good low-post scorer with advanced/nimble footwork and use of fakes. Calls for the ball and goes to work quickly, commands double-teams at this level. Uses his body well to carve out space, understands positioning and sealing his man better than almost any prospect you’ll see at this age. Good baseline spin that can end with a drop-step jam. Knows how to get defenders in foul trouble. Free throw attempts: 6.5 FTA UAA 2023, 4.8 FTA NBPA Top 100 2023, 4.1 FTA EYBL Scholastic 2023-24 … Solid strength and finishes well through contact … Flashes midrange shooting ability … Soft touch, accurate around the rim, and doesn’t hesitate to use either hand. Efficient scorer: 11.1 PPG on a 2nd best 57.9% FG% NIBC 2022-23, 19.5 PPG 58.6% FG% UAA 2023, 18 PPG on a 5th best 65.5% FG% NBPA Top 100 2023, 16.3 PPG (2nd best) 61.1% FG% EYBL Scholastic 2023-24 … Good free throw shooter, showing drastic improvement each season, from shooting 33.3% FT% in 2021-22 and 56.1% FT% 2022-23 to a 5th best 85.7% FT% over the EYBL Scholastic in 2023-24 … Solid ability to dribble and push the ball when needed but doesn’t put it down in congestion after catching a pass or offensive rebound. Sees the floor well and capable of making impressive passes out of the post as well as outlet passes after defensive rebounds … Very good rebounder on both ends. Secures the ball with both hands. Rebounding stats: 4th best 6.3 RPG (2 ORPG) NIBC 2022-23, 10.8 RPG UAA 2023, 2nd best 10.4 RPG (3rd best 3.2 ORPG) NBPA Top 100 2023, 2nd best 8.7 RPG (3rd best 2.9 ORPG) EYBL Scholastic 2023-24 … Alert for the pass and has good hands, catches bullets in traffic … Quick hands defending on the ball … Vocal and directs traffic. Understands the team concept on both ends … Doesn’t get rushed. Plays within himself and doesn’t try to do too much …
Weaknesses: He’s made noticeable strides over his high school career but can continue toning his body … Traditional post player and lacks style of play that favors big men in today’s game … Lacks explosive athleticism and generally finishes below the rim … Doesn’t stretch the floor. Looks uncomfortable in shooting drills and doesn’t shoot a clean ball from distance. Shot 0-7 from 3PT combining all his 3PT attempts over both NIBC seasons (2021-22, 2022-23), Under Armour Association 2023, NBPA Top 100 2023, and EYBL Scholastic season 2023-24 … He did show improvement his senior year, but he isn’t a heavy shot blocker or rim protector. Doesn’t keep the opposing team out of the paint with him in the middle. Shot blocking: 0.3 BPG NIBC 2021-22, 0.6 BPG NIBC 2022-23, 1.1 BPG EYBL Scholastic 2023-24. Stays defending in the post, not the type to switch out on the perimeter or defend the pick and roll … Holds more value as a college prospect than NBA … Older for his class, will turn 20 in December of his freshman year of college …
Outlook: Maryland freshman … Played in the 2022 and 2023 UA Next Elite 24 … Helped Montverde Academy to a 33-0 record and won Chipotle Nationals in 2024 … MVP of the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game with 23 points (10-15 FG), 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals … Scored 20 points in the 2024 Jordan Brand Classic …
