NBA Comparison: Amir Coffey

Strength: The lefty made a name for himself at the FIBA U19s where he outplayed likely top overall pick Zacharrie Risacher to lead the French team … Melvin at 6’8 with an impressive 8’10 standing reach has good size for a wing … Well build he tends to overpower opponents with his strength … A good athlete, he will finish plays off with dunks … Runs the lanes well on the fast break finishing plays with lobs, dunks and euro steps … In half court sets, he tends to stay on the perimeter, shooting catch and shoot corner or wing threes … Will pump fake on a quick closeout and attempt to finish plays at the rim or for a mid-range shot usually at the elbow. .. When crowded will use a crossover to get by opponents … Has shot the ball well from the free throw line in both FIBA and French league competitions and expectations should be a 75% or above shooter from the line at the NBA level … Shot the 3 ball extremely well in 2022-23 season for Saint Quentin (39.4%) bringing him increased intrigue as a 3 and D wing prospect … Has had experience coming off the bench and sharing playing time at Saint Quentin making it one less adjustment he would have to make at the NBA level. Understands his role on the team and his limitations as a player. ..

Weakness: Epitome of a streaky shooter … While he shot the 3 ball well both in the 22-23 season in Pro B and the FIBA U19, he did not shoot it particularly well this season in the top French league going 46/149 or 31% … In addition, he was a sub 30% three-point shooter in youth basketball for the INSEP team Pôle France … The question for scouts is whether he turned the corner in 22-23 or whether it was just an outlier season for him … No metric has hurt his stock more this season than his drop off from the three-point line … Going from a potential late first to a potential two-way player … In addition, he took twice as many three pointers to twos this season resulting to a sub 40% field goal percentage … In games this season he would have opportunities to shoot a mid-range or go to the hole and elect to shoot the three … Making a case that shot selection is still very much a work in progress … On defense, he tends to overpower opponents with his strength and power but lacks some flexibility in his hips … If the vision is to have him as a 3 and D wing, he needs to show the ability to get more deflections and steals than what he provided for Saint Quentin …

Overall: Has shown flashes to being a rotational player at the NBA level when his outside shot is falling. At 20 years of age he is still relatively young compared to most player in 35-70 range in most team big boards. Will most likely have to iron out his shot and shot selection on a 2 way deal …

Notes: Measured: 6′ 7.25” barefoot, 8′ 10.5” standign reach, 213.8 lbs, 6′ 7.5” wingspan and a 31 inch max vertical at the 2024 NBA Draft Combine … Cousin of former NBA player Alexis Ajinça …
